For a landowner considering native woodland, the Native Tree Area Scheme offers one of the strongest financial incentives currently available for small-scale planting.

🌳 NTA 1: €2,206/ha/year for 10 years
🌿 NTA 2: €2,284/ha/year for 10 years

With up to one hectare of each category permitted on an eligible holding, this can represent up to €44,900 in premium payments across two hectares over 10 years.

There is also an establishment grant of €6,744 per hectare, with additional supports potentially available for fencing and tree shelters.

The figures are compelling, but the land still needs to meet the scheme requirements.

One of the questions farmers understandably ask before considering forestry is: “What happens to my BISS?”

The current Department guidance states that planting a forest does not affect CAP entitlements and that farmers can continue to claim Basic Income Support for Sustainability on eligible forested land, subject to the BISS terms and conditions.

That can be an important part of the financial picture when considering forestry alongside your existing farm enterprise.

The right forestry decision starts by looking at the whole farm, not just one area in isolation.

What if planting trees did not mean giving up farming that land?

Agroforestry combines trees with agricultural activity, providing farmers with another option for diversifying their land while continuing to farm.

Under the current FT8 Agroforestry scheme, eligible projects can receive:

🌳 €8,555 per hectare in establishment grant support
💶 €1,170 per hectare per year for 10 years in annual premiums

Alongside the financial support, trees can contribute to shelter, biodiversity and the longer-term resilience of the farm.

Every site is different, so the first step is understanding whether the land is suitable and whether Agroforestry fits your objectives.

Today is National Tree Day 2026, a reminder that planting is not simply about adding trees. It is about putting the right trees in the right place and thinking about what they can deliver over the long term.

For farmers and landowners, forestry can form part of a wider plan for the land, supporting diversification, shelter, biodiversity and future income opportunities.

Depending on the land and the forestry option selected, grants and annual premium payments may also be available.

If you have an area of land and want to understand what forestry could offer, our team can assess the options with you.

The Native Tree Area Scheme (NTA) allows farmers and landowners to establish small areas of native woodland on their land, with financial support over 10 years.

There are two categories:

🌱 NTA 1: €2,206 per hectare per year
🌿 NTA 2: €2,284 per hectare per year

An area can have up to 2 hectares in total, with up to 1 hectare in each category. This can provide up to €44,900 in premiums over 10 years per hectare, depending on the category.

And there is another benefit worth noting: the premiums are income tax-free.
