I remember growing up in 80's Ireland and being so fascinated with American culture, it was so different and it seemed sooooooo coooooool.

My favourite EVER movies, John Hughes' and just deepened it.

The actual notion of having your own phone in your room, phones with long cords, phones shaped like burgers!!!

Ok so I'm in Canada not America - I know very different - totally different country but I had a moment the other day that lit my 14 year old heart on fire when I saw this beauty.

A proper 70s music & sound home intercom and radio unit. Speaker switches for all the rooms -YOU CAN BROADCAST THROUGH THE HOUSE... AM/FM dial with the little red needle.

A whole house's worth of control on one wood-panelled box.

IT STILL WORKS.

So many people think they don't have a big enough story. I hear that all the time, in workshops and 1:1.

They think they need to have literally climbed mountains, survived major dramas, built something epic from nothing.

It's looking at the highlight reels and feeling yourself fall short.

Deciding your story doesn't count. Keeping quiet. Staying small. Getting on with it.

But story finding isn't just about hunting for big moments (Although they are worthwhile of course)

It's about taking time to notice and honour all the twist & turn stories that shape a life, build our identity, help and hinder us.

The decision that led to change, the nugget of wisdom your granny shared, the day you nearly gave up but didn't.

For me, that's where the gold is. It's in the small, true, human bits, a kaleidoscope that looks different every time you turn it.

You don't need a big story and you certainly don't need a better one. You need to know that there is gold in your journey, the highs and the lows.

So take the time, have a look back and see what emerges.

This was going to be a post about my process in designing a workshop. How I am so fortunate to be able to turn to fairy tales & wise women for inspiration.

I wanted to share it because these are the main books that I have used to create the content for my next and newest storyfinding workshop - Spinning the Gold.

In the workshop l draw on the teachings of Maureen Murdock, to help participants navigate through the deep well of their own stories. To map and find, share and reflect, strengthen and deepen.

And fairytales - these two books of & were a birthday present from my mum when I was a teenager.

I have always treasured them but it was who showed me the value of going back to those stories to find a compass for these times.

So yeah it started as a post about my process but when I looked again, I saw that it proves the very point that I make in the workshop. About how stories are literally everywhere... Ready and waiting to teach us.

I look at this picture and the books and I can find stories about the parts within it.

🪡The sewing stool I rescued from the dump at an old shirt factory in Derry and where the phrase 'Any bars' comes from...

🌹My garden in the background, made beautiful because my friend Brid gave me countless plants and confidence.

💸I can see a story about the gravel in the ground and a time when I had no money and a friend helped me out.

Hmmmm this was unexpected. My own photograph is teaching me things. I might have to have a lie down now. Is this what it means when something is Meta?

Thanks to Dawn Nickel, PhD. Taryn Strong SHE RECOVERS® Foundation for helping me bring my story session to Victoria. Workshop is next Sunday 26 July, tickets available, link in bio 🇨🇦
