In this instance the word ''Affirm'' replaces the word ''Swear'' in the oath, and the jurat instead reads ''Affirmed before me etc''

There is a duty on a Commissioner to see that a person who wishes to affirmed states the grounds on which he objects to be sworn, even though the grounds is not shown on the face of the written affirmation.

The essential function of a Commissioner for Oaths is the swearing of persons who come before him to the truth of evidence which has been reduced to writing in a draft affidavit. The Commissioner must ensure that the person has read the draft affidavit and fully understands its contents. The Commissioner will require for the purposes of swearing deponents, the New Testament (for Catholics), the Authorised King James Version (for Protestants) & the Old Testament (for Jews). The deponent will swear to the truth of his affadivit by swearing the truth on the appropriate testament.
