On today’s Nine ‘til Noon show we were joined by Anne-Marie McDevitt who is urging others to be vigilant when using appliances as her dishwasher went on fire.

The dishwasher is 18 years old. I was standing next to it.

I thought it was steam but then it was black smoke.

We smothered it and we got it under control with damp towels.

There was no indication that it was wearing away. Never gave a day's trouble.

We have no fire blankets, extinguishers etc in the house.
We were ill prepared.

Thankfully now we’ve got all the appropriate gear.

My husband ran down to his work to get a fire extinguisher.

The control panel was melting and on fire.

I know you shouldn't use damp towels on electrical fires but I had nothing else.

It shows the importance of not leaving appliances on like the washing machine and dishwasher even phone chargers.

We were so lucky that I was there and standing beside it.

Thankfully my husband and his cousin who is a fire fighter got it out.

The smoke alarm didn't even go off during the fire.

We are shook up and now I'm turning off everything as I’m on high alert.
