A little information about Dental Exams published by the BHS;

It is important to be aware that there are many ‘equine dentists’ who do not have sufficient qualifications. As a result serious problems could be missed or ineffective treatment given to your horse which could have serious implications in the future.

Worth a read for every horse owner; at least half the horses/ponies I see need more treatment than just routine rasping of sharp edges

Recent studies have found that up to 70% of horses have unrecognised dental problems. This is a real welfare concern for our horses as dental problems can seriously deteriorate unseen until the horse shows clinical signs.

Interesting case this week of an older horse with a slight undershot jaw. In this case as the horse grew older, the top and bottom incisors were no longer wearing each other down & the top incisors were actually pushing the bottom ones loose. I removed all the lower incisors to make him comfortable again, he will continue to be ridden etc but will have a different smile from now on!
The photos give you an idea of how long the roots of horses teeth are!
