After the warmest spell of the year so far, the return of rain this week changes grass management on farm. Teagasc Grass10's target pre-grazing yield remains 1,300β1,400kg DM/ha but after a dry spell followed by rain, covers can vary from paddock to paddock.
What to prioritise this week:
Before making any grazing decisions, walk the farm and know its current state
Prioritise controlling grass covers
Rest rain-softened paddocks this week; poaching now costs you weeks of grass growth
Recheck water troughs β dehydrated cows will be reflected in milk yield
As Teagasc Grass10 has consistently noted, every extra 1kg DM of grass eaten per cow per day over the season is worth β¬120/cow in additional profit. Managing this transition well protects that return.
