🚨 The alarm went off…

and for a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not because they didn’t care.

Because no one knew who was in charge.

People looked around.
Waited.
Assumed someone else would take control.

Some started moving.
Some stayed where they were.

No clear direction.

No leadership.

Afterwards, the feedback was simple:

“We thought someone else was dealing with it.”

That moment explains more than most procedures ever could.

Because in the moment…

uncertainty spreads fast.

Most workplaces have a fire plan.

But when the alarm goes off…

plans don’t lead.

People do.

We see this happen more often than people think.

People know the procedure —
where to go, what to do.

But when pressure is introduced…

hesitation spreads.

Not because they don’t understand it.

Because they’re not used to leading it.

That’s what changes everything.

In an emergency, people don’t follow instructions on paper.

They follow the person who takes control.

Clear voice.
Calm direction.
Immediate action.

Without that…

confusion takes over fast.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Assigning a Fire Warden
is not the same as preparing one.

A name on a list doesn’t create leadership.

Confidence does.
Clarity does.
Practice does.

That’s what proper Fire Warden training should build.

Not just knowledge.

Control under pressure.

🚨 He collapsed… and for a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not because they didn’t care.

Because they didn’t know what to do.

I was speaking to someone recently about an incident in their workplace.

A colleague went down suddenly.

People gathered.
Phones came out.
Someone said to call an ambulance.

But in those first few moments…

no one took action.

Afterwards, one of them said:

“I’ve done first aid before… I just froze.”

That’s the part most people don’t expect.

It’s not that people haven’t been trained.

It’s that when it happens for real…

pressure takes over.

We see this play out in training every time.

People can talk through the steps confidently.

But when you introduce urgency…

hesitation appears.

Not because they don’t know what to do.

Because they haven’t had to do it.

And that changes everything.

First aid isn’t just knowledge.

It’s speed.
Confidence.
Instinct.

And those fade over time.

Quietly.

Until the moment you need them.

That hesitation —
is what changes outcomes.

Not the certificate.

The response.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Time doesn’t just pass after training.

It erodes confidence.

That’s what recertification should fix.

Not ticking a box.

Removing hesitation.

Making the response automatic again.

We’ve got a PHECC First Aid Response (FAR) recertification coming up
focused on real scenarios and hands-on response.
