It is increasingly likely that next week in some parts of the country could be one of the coldest weeks in decades with many areas of Ireland lying under a blanket of snow and with a bitterly cold airmass in place our temperatures are set to plummet.
Indeed lowest overnight temperatures in areas where snowfall persists could reach down to -12 or -13 based off the latest forecast models. With daytime maximum temperatures of -5 likely in those same locations, which is phenomenally cold in the content of Irish meteorology.
While our focus is on the heavy snowfall expected on Saturday into Monday morning we must also think about the long harsh duration of this cold spell and in particular pay close attention to those most vulnerable in society, especially the elderly or those living alone in rural areas.
More details to follow this morning with weather warnings imminent from Irelands Weather Channel.
