Should you be aiming for new followers or lots of likes from your social media content? The answer depends on what you’re looking to achieve. But did you know that some content is better at driving follows, while others are better at increasing engagement with your existing followers?

This article from social media experts, Planoly, explains more. In summary

For new followers, think about

• Sharing your point of view on particular topics
• Providing simple frameworks that people can follow, eg, this is how I solve that problem
• Content that feels part of a series

If it’s engagement you’re after, focus on

• Founder-led content, ie, content that has meaning for those that know you
• Milestone and celebration posts
• Trend participation

What platform should you use to market your small business?

This depends on your target audience. Where are they most likely to be?

• Facebook – typically aged 45 and over, people use Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends, and to link in with what’s happening in the community

• Instagram – most popular amongst those 45 and under, Insta is a visual platform focused on lifestyle and inspiration

• TikTok – whilst creators continue to be very young (majority under 30), an increasing number of older audiences are turning to the platform, particularly for entertainment

• LinkedIn – professional platform, this works hardest for Business-to-Business (B2B) marketing

Remember

• You don’t have to be everywhere. It’s better to do 1 platform well than spread yourself too thinly.
• Be consistent – aim for at least one post a week. Don’t aim for any more than is realistic for you.
