What platform should you use to market your small business?

This depends on your target audience. Where are they most likely to be?

• Facebook – typically aged 45 and over, people use Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends, and to link in with what’s happening in the community

• Instagram – most popular amongst those 45 and under, Insta is a visual platform focused on lifestyle and inspiration

• TikTok – whilst creators continue to be very young (majority under 30), an increasing number of older audiences are turning to the platform, particularly for entertainment

• LinkedIn – professional platform, this works hardest for Business-to-Business (B2B) marketing

Remember

• You don’t have to be everywhere. It’s better to do 1 platform well than spread yourself too thinly.
• Be consistent – aim for at least one post a week. Don’t aim for any more than is realistic for you.

Recent studies suggest that more and more of us are searching on Instagram vs Google. So, how do you ensure your business page gets found when someone is looking for a business just like yours?

1. Include keywords and phrases in your captions (these are the terms that someone might be putting in their search)
2. Hook them in the first 3 seconds
3. Tap into what people are already asking
4. Optimise your profile – this means ensuring your bio has lots of keywords, etc
5. Repurpose content that’s working for you

April can be a busy month at Business IQ, and this time management book helps to get us through it! It’s packed full of top tips on how to manage your time effectively, ensuring you’re getting through the important things, no matter what, and hopefully, coming out with a bit of work-life balance. We can’t recommend it enough.

The 3 most important steps to take before starting your own business

1. Talk to potential customers. Do your research. Don’t assume anything. Listen carefully and observe. Is there a market for what you’re offering? Are there tweaks you can make to make it more of a success?

2. Check pricing carefully. Research what others are charging. If there are no direct competitors, check pricing against what your customers are buying now. Price in line with your customers' expectations. Too high, and you’re unlikely to generate trial. Too low, and you could be signalling that your product or service is inferior to others. And be sure to cost your product or service appropriately, to ensure you’re charging enough to cover your costs and make a margin.

3. Keep your business idea simple. If you have to explain it in detail, it’s likely your potential customers will lose interest before purchasing.

We love our books here at Business IQ, and this is one of the best. Applicable to all parts of your life, the concept is simple – Let Them is about relinquishing the power you give other people, and Let Me is about taking power over your reactions to things.

Highly recommend.
