Perseverance

This is one trait you must possess when on the job hunt. It's a difficult market, very tough and very grueling, but how you overcome the 'I regret to inform you', 'sorry you're unsuccessful' emails is what will make the difference.

1. Set yourself achievable goals each week. Send 2 or 3 (maybe even 1) really good application(s) to jobs you are qualified for rather than 50+ applications to roles you're likely not be selected for.

2. Allow yourself to reflect. Ask for feedback from recruiters / employers, especially after an interview, to help you with your next application.

3. Do your best. Job hunting can be exhausting but all anyone can do is their best. Burnout can happen so remember that if you don't achieve your goal this week, you will do much better next week.

4. Take a break. If you need to step away for a day, do (especially if you're staring at the same application). Recharge and tackle your goal tomorrow with a fresh perspective.

5. Look at the positive experiences and what you've learned. Change how you reply to certain answers in an interview or how you frame your experience in your CV. While it may not feel like it, all the hard work you are doing is a learning curve.

You got this!

Have an upcoming interview? Feeling a little nervous?

We offer a one-to-one Interview Prep Service where we cover generic questions like 'What are your strengths?', 'Tell me about yourself...' and look at competency based questions to help shape your examples.

This service differs from a mock interview as it's less formal, more casual and is tailored to your needs. It's designed to show you how to answer questions and build your confidence - making you feel more prepared for the interview itself.

You can choose from a 1hr, 1.5hr or 2hr session and feedback notes are provided. For the best results, book your spot at least two days before your interview.

Check out the options below or you can email - [email protected] - for more information 🙂

𝙒𝙏𝙁 𝙞𝙨 𝙜𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣?! 🤬

My feed (mostly on LinkedIn) is filled with conflicting 'advice' on what to do, or not to do, when it comes to job search approaches, CVs or interviews.

It's confusing. It's sometimes contradictory.

But, most importantly, the advice is often a personal preference of the person sharing it (especially between CV Writers).

Here's what I have to say:

1) Don't blindly listen to what's being shared. Look at someone's experience over how many followers they may have. If they have both, and you like what they're saying, roll with it!

2) People are trying to go viral and latch on to what's trending. Just because they sound like they know what they're talking about, doesn't make it true. Look at their profiles and their background. You may find that they work as a Data Analyst or in an unrelated field.

3) CV Writing isn't regulated so there's no 'industry standard' that writers follow. The quality standard set is based on the writer themselves. Those who understand the recruitment practices, have related education and years of experience behind them generally know what they're talking about.

Take what you read with a pinch of salt; sprinkle your CV with advice from different sources to create a document that works for you.

Never underestimate the time you need for job hunting.

1) Job Search - what jobs you want to apply to; do they match your criteria i.e. location, salary, company?

2) Get Your Application Ready - are you sending a CV, completing an application form? When is the deadline?

3) Wait For Selection - are you invited to an interview / are you not? Does the job have more than one selection stages?

4) Interview - you go to the interview and do your best to impress

5) Wait For A Result - did you get a job offer?

6) Start In Your New Job - after a long time you finally made it!

All of this seems simple on paper, but the reality is that it takes months to make it to the next stage, which might not be an interview.

Yes, you could put all of your eggs in one basket but in that time, how many other jobs could you have applied for and been successful?

Job hunting is like dating - dip your toe into the pool to see what bites but don't wait too long for the right catch; you may miss out on something special.

Don't let the article title fool you.

I'm not talking about having 20 different iterations of your CV.

I'm talking about the benefits of having maybe 3 or 4 versions of your CV that targets different industries, jobs or skills that you possess and can send quickly to related positions.

The True Jobseeker Story (as told through memes)

Understanding what you need to add to your CV vs. what recruiters / headhunters want to see can be difficult to balance.

But, having the same skills listed as everyone else will have people scrolling on, missing your chance for an interview.

Here's what you need to do:

✔️ Have a CV that's punchy, action-orientated and relatable to the job
✔️ Highlight the additional value you can bring to the role by emphasising your transferable skills
✔️ Demonstrate the results of your actions; don't just list your duties
✔️ Look at what makes you, you; outlining your personality and how you can fit in with the team or corporate culture will be a huge bonus

Don't wait for people to notice you; get in touch with me today so I can help you to tell your story.
