The Real Lesson

Looking back over the past month...

The biggest lesson wasn't about redundancy.

It was about confidence.

People walked into my office carrying uncertainty.

They walked out carrying a plan.

Some retired earlier.

Some paid off debt.

Some took time out.

Some found new jobs almost immediately.

Every journey was different.

But they all had one thing in common.

They stopped reacting...
..and started making deliberate decisions.

That's what financial planning should do.

Not predict the future.

Give you choices when the future arrives.

And perhaps that's the real measure of financial security.

Not how much money you have.

But how many options it gives you.

What Would You Do?

Here's a question worth asking yourself today.

If your employer announced redundancies tomorrow...

What would you do?

Would you know how long your money would last?

Could you afford to take time out?

Would early retirement be possible?

Would you understand your pension options?

Or would you be making decisions under pressure?

The best time to answer these questions isn't after HR calls.

It's long before.

Preparation Changes Everything

The easiest meetings weren't with the wealthiest clients.

They were with the best prepared.

We already knew where their pensions were.

Their investments were organised.

Their debts were understood.

Their goals were documented.

That meant we could spend our time making decisions instead of gathering paperwork.

Preparation doesn't stop bad things happening.

It simply means you're ready when they do.

That's an enormous advantage.

The Path of Least Resistance

One sentence stayed with me.

"I don't actually enjoy my job anymore."

It wasn't said once.

It was said repeatedly.

People had stayed because...

The salary was good.

The shares looked promising.

The mortgage needed paying.

Life became comfortable.

Years slipped by.

Redundancy forced them to ask questions they'd been avoiding.

What do I actually want next?

Sometimes life's interruptions force us to have conversations we've postponed for years.

Burnout Was Hiding in Plain Sight

Something unexpected emerged during these meetings.

Many people admitted...

"I was exhausted."

Years of deadlines.

Long commutes.

Corporate restructures.

Pressure.

Constant change.

They hadn't realised how tired they were until someone else decided their employment was ending.

Several clients described their redundancy as something they never wanted...

But ultimately needed.

Sometimes our bodies know before our minds do.

Money can't eliminate stress.

But good planning can give you permission to recover properly.

Some People Could Actually Slow Down

Here's the surprise.

Not everyone needed to rush into another job.

Some clients had accumulated pensions, savings and redundancy payments that gave them options.

For a few...

Early retirement became possible.

Others could afford to take six months away from work.

Some decided to spend more time with family before returning to employment.

The answer was different for everyone.

But every one of those answers came from planning.

Financial freedom isn't necessarily never working again.

Sometimes it's simply having the choice.

A Big Lump Sum Doesn't Last Forever

One lesson kept repeating itself.

A generous redundancy package can create a false sense of security.

A six-figure payment sounds enormous.

Until you remember...

It has to replace your salary.

Pay household bills.

Cover family spending.

Possibly last much longer than expected.

Without a plan, even a substantial payment can disappear surprisingly quickly.

That wasn't what some people wanted to hear.

But realism is part of good advice.

Optimism is wonderful.

Optimism backed by numbers is much better.

Numbers Calm the Mind

Once we'd talked through the emotions...

We started looking at the numbers.

Salary.

Redundancy package.

Savings.

Mortgage.

Pensions.

Monthly spending.

Future income.

Almost immediately, the conversation changed.

Instead of...

"What if?"
..the questions became...

"What could I do?"

Cashflow planning has that effect.

It replaces assumptions with evidence.

Whether the answer is positive or challenging, certainty is almost always less stressful than uncertainty.

Knowledge really is power.

The Fear Was Real

Before we looked at a single number, we talked.

People often think financial advisers spend all day talking about pensions and investments.

The truth is...

For the first twenty minutes, we hardly discussed money.

We discussed worry.

"What will my family think?"

"What if I can't get another job?"

"I'm too young to retire."

"I've never been unemployed."

Redundancy attacks more than income.

It attacks confidence.

That's why financial planning starts with people, not spreadsheets.

Only when someone feels heard can they begin to make rational decisions.

Sometimes the best advice isn't financial.

It's helping someone realise they're not facing this alone.

The Phone Started Ringing...

Over the past month, my diary has looked very different.

The phone started ringing with calls from clients working for two large employers who had announced significant redundancy programmes.

The conversations were almost identical.

"I think I'm going to lose my job."

Behind those words were fear, uncertainty and dozens of unanswered questions.

Will I have enough money?

What happens to my pension?

Can I afford the mortgage?

Should I start looking for another job immediately?

I couldn't answer those questions over the phone.

But I could reassure them that we'd work through them together.

Over the following weeks, I met many of these clients.

Almost every meeting ended with the same comment.

"I feel much better now."

Nothing had changed about their redundancy.

But everything had changed about their understanding of it.

Fear thrives in uncertainty.

Confidence grows from having a plan.

Over the next couple of weeks, I'll share some of the biggest lessons from these conversations.

Because redundancy isn't just about losing a job.

Sometimes it's about finding your next direction.
