After a winter of writing, today I am holding the first hard copy of my new book.
It is not finished yet. There is still editing, copy-editing, layout, and all the final steps before publication later this year. Yet today on a full moon feels like a milestone worth celebrating.
Many of you will know my first book, Saved by a Horse. This new book grew out of that journey but expanded into the wider animal realm and into a deeper exploration of what animals can teach us about being human.
Throughout the winter, I listened, wrote, rewrote, and occasionally thought the book was complete—only for another chapter appear.
One surprise was a chapter exploring how animals can reconnect us with the sacred, both within ourselves and in the world around us. Looking back now, I can see it was waiting for the time to show up ! It was moving to tears to research and write it.
Part of the inspiration for this book was deepened during a visit to Gubbio in Italy, standing beside the statue of Saint Francis and the wolf. Something about that experience invited me to go further into Animal Assisted Learning and listen more closely to the wisdom that all animals offer us every day.
The manuscript has now gone to a trusted friend and fellow writer for a first reading, which feels like another important step in the journey.
Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me, shared stories of the animals in their own lives, read my writing, attended events, or simply cheered me on from the sidelines. Your support means more than you know.
Over the coming weeks, I will begin sharing excerpts and reflections from the book.
For today, I taking a moment to celebrate the fact that after a winter of writing, I can finally hold the next phase in my hands.
