AM Learning - Wake up to Why Áine Maher – BSc, MSc, M.Ps.S.I

Áine is a Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Consultant specialising in Neuropsychological Education for Business.

As a writer, speaker, facilitator and consultant, she draws on her professional, educational and personal experience to connect with her audience, using neuroscience to enhance the learning experience across a range of topics. With a BSc in Psychology from Dublin City University, she began her career in neuropsychology as a technician in a start-up. Áine worked with clientele from the clinical pop

ulation as well as peak performers, working through a program focused on training the brain to encourage behavioural change. She then made the jump to the corporate world by joining the People Operations EMEA Team at Facebook. While focusing on the employee experience in her Human Resources role, Áine got involved in company culture through the Employee Resource Group (ERG) communities, in particular the Differently Abled ERG. With disability, mental health and neurodiversity the group’s core pillars, Áine joined the Differently Abled ERG committee and subsequently became Co-Lead due to her interest and education in these areas and her own affiliation with the group. Alongside her professional career, she decided to follow her passion and further her educational qualifications and graduated with distinction from the MSc in the Psychology and Neuroscience of Mental Health from King’s College London. ERGs introduced Áine to a new lens to look at mental health through, focusing on diversity of thought and emotional inclusion. This further fuelled her passion for the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging for all people in the employee population. She was inspired to begin her consultancy career in Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging and use her understanding of neuroscience and psychology to drive for greater inclusion across these topics, focusing on key pieces around mental wellbeing and neuropsychology as enablers of deep learning and behavioural change. Since doing so, Áine has continued her professional development and become an accredited Facet 5 practitioner as part of her journey to becoming a coaching psychologist.

Áine is Founder and Principal Consultant of AM Learning, where her work focuses on Neuropsychological Education in Business, using neuroscience and psychology in the Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging space. Áine’s unique approach emphasis on keeping mentally healthy as a key factor in this journey for all, building from the inner work of self-care to the outer work of allyship and empathetic company culture. Alongside her own consultancy work, Áine works as a consultant with New Inclusion Consultancy group, as an also engages with projects focused on Neurodiversity Education and Neuroinclusion with US based company ‘Uptimize’.

Áine lives in Wexford, Ireland with her partner and their cat, Floki, who frequently makes appearances in her virtual sessions!

There's lots of versions of this quote, all with the message that focusing on diversity is just one part of the story. Without understanding more about inclusion and belonging, and how to bring these to life, our company cultures risk being labelled as tokenistic and performative. Get in touch to talk more about what this means for you and the people you work with! 🌍

Sometimes we get a bit too complicated when we start thinking about looking after our mental wellbeing.

No matter what state our mental health is in; be it in need of constant maintenance and attention, or something we don't really think about, focusing on the basics builds a strong foundation 🧠 💪

Each of these will pose different challenges for people. What's your experience?

What do we mean by 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴?

Sometimes we think mental wellbeing is something complicated, or something that only some people need to consider. Actually, our mental health is just like our physical health. Everyone has it, it goes through ebs and flows, and we need to look after it 🫶

Often we default to ‘the way we’ve always done things’ in terms of how we cooperate and collaborate with others. Neuroinclusion is about recognising that one particular style of problem solving, communicating or learning does not suit every brain, and instead being actively inclusive of different styles of behaviour.

Stay tuned for some examples of what Neuroinclusion might look like

Our brains are like fingerprints 🧠 We all have a unique pattern.

Often we get stuck thinking that Neurodiversity refers to a specific group of people, or a specific set of diagnosis. Actually, it is just a word to capture the basic human biological fact that we all have different brains

In our new hybrid world, we need to ensure sessions are inclusive of the entire audience. Using interactive tools, every delegate has the chance to contribute to the sessions, be them in person, virtual, or hybrid.

There’s also the option of recording sessions and having access to a virtual showcase, ensuring all timeszones get a chance to tune in 🖥

These four pillars are the key elements that inform my approach with clients.

Starting with the self and the importance of being mentally healthy, building self awareness with a full understanding of neuroinclusion, appreciating we are hard wired for bias, before expanding our understanding of all the layers of diversity that come with being human.

I love these quotes in the 6 minute diary. Today is the first day in a loooong time that I picked it up. Sometimes they really hit home. 📔

Back on the path, not trying to get somewhere. 🌻

Why does it hurt that bit more or me? Despite the fact we hear of these stories daily of unsolicited violence?…

…because she’s just like me.

Aisling Murphy was going for a run. Taking all the precautions women take daily, across the globe.

Proximity to identity matters. It hits home in a different way.

We move from cognitive empathy to emotional empathy and it’s a different kind of consuming.

Remember how this feels. 💜💜

Instead of having wedding favours at each place setting, my husband and I decided to make a donation.

Tomorrow marks the end of and being introduced to Fionn's story through my sister, we wanted to play a part in raising funds for the Fionn Brogan Trust: https://www.idonate.ie/5119_fionn-brogan-trust.html

Fionn had been diagnosed with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy in April 2019. DMD is an inherited genetic condition leading to an increasing level of disability through Fionn’s life. Duchennes is life limiting and the average life expectancy of a child with Duchennes is mid twenties. There is no cure.

Please show your support by sharing the details to donate in the final two days of 30 Days of Fionn and help raise funds for this brave little person and his family. You can donate via the link above, or via the fundraising page that started with my sisters and I doing the VHII Women's Mini-Marathon.

Your support is greatly appreciated. 🌻
