“I think everybody should have to work in hospitality or retail.”

In this clip from 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐻𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑛 𝑆𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐵𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑃𝑜𝑑𝑐𝑎𝑠𝑡, Becci Harrison explains why she believes everyone should experience customer-facing work at least once in their life.

It teaches something many people only understand once they’ve stood on the other side of the counter:

How difficult it can be to deal with people who are impatient, dismissive or unnecessarily rude, how much emotional energy goes into serving the public all day and how quickly customer-facing roles can be looked down on, despite the skill, patience and resilience they require.

🌿 We’re hiring on behalf of O’Hanlon Herbs (Glenealy, Co. Wicklow)! 🌿

O’Hanlon Herbs is recruiting for two key roles:

Training & HR Coordinator – training coordination, onboarding support, HR admin/compliance, attendance reporting, and helping shape a positive employee experience.

Packhouse Leader / Floor Manager – leading production/packing teams, driving KPIs, quality and food safety standards, and supporting continuous improvement in a fast-paced environment.

If you’re organised, proactive, and people-focused (HR/Training) or you’re a hands-on operations leader with food/FMCG/production experience (Packhouse), we’d love you to apply.

If you know someone who would be a great fit for either position, please share this post with them.

Probation is *not* a box-ticking exercise - it’s your best window to act.

Yes, it should be positive and focused on getting to know each other. But if things go wrong early (timekeeping, attitude, team conflict), don’t wait and hope it settles. If you don’t address issues during probation, it becomes much harder afterwards - and once someone passes the first 12 months, additional protections apply.

The tricky part is that this often requires a difficult conversation - and avoidance is what creates bigger problems later.

Use probation properly: do the induction, set clear expectations, review progress halfway through, and review again at the end.

Then make the call: is this the right fit for your organisation?

If you’d like support to handle those conversations fairly and confidently (or to review your probation process and documentation), Woodview HRM can help.

The first 3–6 months of employment are your best chance to set the relationship up for success.

Yes, the “honeymoon phase” should feel positive - but good onboarding isn’t just about being welcoming.

It’s about being clear: sharing your culture and ways of working, setting expectations and outputs early, and giving people the tools, information and support they need to do the job well.

When you get that foundation right, you don’t just improve performance - you strengthen retention and reduce avoidable conflict down the line.

“They hear what they want to hear.”

That line comes up a lot in performance conversations.

I can't overstate this: if the message isn’t clear, people will fill in the gaps themselves - and usually not in the way you intended.

Do what you’re *good* at, not just what you love.

In this clip, Sharon Farrell of Face Credit shares a really grounded take on careers and business - focus on where you genuinely add value, back yourself sooner, and move a bit faster (even if it's hindsight that makes that easy to say).

Most importantly, you still have to go on the journey, learn as you go, and enjoy it along the way.

Would you do the same thing again if you were starting over?
