Things I've learnt on Enrollment 1: Getting myself out of the way of enrollment
In the recent 2 years I've been participating in the Matery Schcool for Transfomative Leadership. In this year, the third, I've decided to master the Distinction: Enrollment. In other words, I am interested in mastering when is Enrollment present and when it is missing. I will learn that by looking at life from this distinction, working with this distinction in my day-to-day life, and creating this distinction with others.
But what do I mean "Enrollment is present"? I mean that in my communication with another, I can see that he sees some possibility as possible now and exciting. For example, she can see the possibility of compassion is possible now and exciting. Or he can see that the possibility of peace is possible now and exciting. Why is it important to see that another person sees something as possible? Because seeing that change is possible, is the first step in transforming reality.
I am sharing here my first research note.
How can I get in the way of Enrollment? And what can I do to get out of the way?
Enrollment is something that happens in communication, in dialog, in a conversation. As one of the dancers on the dancefloor of dialog, I have a lot of power and impact on the resulting dance. And even after saying that - Enrollment is like a magic that happens on its own. The best I can do is allow it to create itself. To avoid distracting or wrecking it.
1. Shout out your dreams! Out of the Closet!
Get out of the closet with your dreams. Be bold about them. Once you are freely expressing what is of real importance for you, what makes your eyes shine with inspiration, the room has changed. Your dreams and envisioned possible futures will set the stage for the possibilitiy of possibilities. Saying them out loud invites excitement and vision into the space.
2. Re-Declare it!
Possibilities are not living on their own. They are born inside conversation, and out of declaration. If you have'nt spoken with that person in a while - you can rest assured that for this person, the possibility has disappeared. What can you do? Just re-presensce the declaration of what's possible by saying: "I stand for this to be possible". That's it.
3. Be curiousity!
What's really powerful in a conversation is being in a state of "not-knowing". What the Buddhists call having a "beginner's mind". Open-ended questions, patience and curiosity can invite this way of being into the conversation. Ask the other - when you hear this possibility, what becomes awaken in you? How could this possibility light or re-frame what's already of importance to you? What could be important to you about this possibility and the quest to bring it to reality for you? What is it that this possiblity allows or invites you to see about your future? What openings for you to express yourself and whats of importance to you, can be seen in the light of this possibility coming to reality?
4. Don't win!
There is also a room to talk about the evidence against it, or the obstacles that are on the way to realize this possibility. You can accept these as they are. Their existance does not negate the existance of the possibility. Yes, there are real challenges. And yes. it is worthy to stand for the possibility and deal with these challenges. Sometimes the existance of the evidence and obstacles only clarifies and make it more distinct, that this possibility is worth struggeling for and standing for.
If you find yourself wanting to argue in favour of the possibility - consider that possibility is not right or wrong. There is no way to prove possibility - as possibility does not live in the realm of facts. It lives in the realm of possibility.
4. Surrender to it!
Sometimes I find myself asking the other and then facing uncomfortable silence. My habit is then offering the other a possible answer. Guessing what could be important for him. While this does ease my uncomfort of waiting in the dark - it has the unwanted chilling effect on the other. It usually leaves the other with a feeling like I already know what he's thinking, what he wants and so on. My answeres are usualy my answeres, and thus they also carry the message that I only care about what I already know. That's the direct opposite of "Beginner's mind". And also has a very chilling effect. It has the other think that I'm not really curious about him. And so, the possibility lands for him as unattractive or unexciting. Invite yourself to "die" in your uncomfort while waiting for the authentic, real answer. Get that possibility has that nature: it can take people on a ride, and bring them to places they did not see lately or never seen before. And they too, need some time and air to come back to the conversation with answers.
5. Don't get triggered!
Whatever happens in the conversation, keep yourself from making it mean anything about you. The other might say things like "you're doing great job" or "you're doing aweful job". Both are statements, and statements are not questions. You have no need to answer theese. You can just say "thank you".
When you do get activated, you react from "something is wrong" or "fight/flight" mechanism. That means you fall from the world of possibilities into the world of right/wrong/evidance. Possibility does not live in this world.
This concludes this research note on the ways in which you can get in the way of Enrollment.
