Most news articles dealing with Sifrei Torah tend to deal either with their dedication or theft, reflecting the highs and lows of the world of Judaica. With the cost of new and refurbished Torahs continuing to rise, its unlikely that the phenomenon of stolen Torahs is going to disappear. The story in today's shared article is a little different as the Torahs themselves weren't stolen rather their silver ornaments were, while the Torahs were "just" desecrated. Its so sad that something that is the focus of peoples prayers continues to be a target of thieves.

Aside from the touching sentiment behind the gift, once again we see that older Torahs have a very long life and and can be refurbished and brought back into regular use. Something to consider if you ever wanted fulfill the mitzvah of writing a Torah, which can be fulfilled by refurbishing a pasul (invalid or non-kosher) Torah. Police has no clue as for who stole the Torah, or why. The Torah was not the only thing that was stolen, however.

How often in life do we come across something so old and complete? It always amazes me when I learn about another relatively isolated Jewish community that has weathered the test of time, in one shape or another. Even more interesting is that the synagogue still has its complement of Sifrei Torah from its founding in 1845, proving once again that older Torahs can still be used ritually and that a refurbished Torah today can be a solid investment.
