What do you think? Is it customization or a cost-cutting red-tape increasing measure?

“My wife, I found this out, she doesn’t like housekeepers [coming into a guest room] during a stay … [But] I like it … The truth of the matter is there are people on all sides. Part of it is due to Covid. Part of it is just that some people don’t want other people in the room. So, we’re not taking it away. We’re just giving them the choice and control. You have the choice, and you control if you want it. We won’t decide for you.”— Chris Nassetta, Hilton CEO, on the company’s new policy of guests needing to opt in for daily housekeeping during a stay.

They often say, knowing what not to do is more important than knowing what to do. If you spend a significant portion of your month on Google or Facebook advertising, how do you know if it is achieving the goal you want? MG&A would love to help analyze this for you and ensure you are getting the most bang for your buck... or Shekel.

“We were spending $800 million on a run-rate basis, mostly on Google ads … and we’ve now realized we don’t have to return to that.” —Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, on how a drastically smaller marketing budget hasn’t impacted traffic to the vacation rental platform

Once again, Israel shows it is a world player where it counts. We may not be Iron Man or the Hulk but Hawkeye was an avenger too. Israel is like the normal (yet cool) guy at the table in the project to build a Quantum Computer.

Israel is investing 1.25 billion NIS in a national initiative to build up quantum proficiency, and this project in particular is part of that initiative.

After watching the presidential debates, I felt to write a longer post about Culture and Policy.

In business, the wise leaders work hard to create healthy company culture. Good money is spent of people like me who come and help create healthy culture.

I've heard it said that Culture trumps Strategy. That is true. You can have great strategy but when pressure rises, facades will fall and the true culture is revealed. That culture may be one of cutting corners and cheating or it can be one of pushing harder and overcoming with integrity. Sometimes it means failing or fading with dignity. We all accept that Michael Jordan had to end his career eventually even if he was the best ever. If he had fought tooth and nail trying enhancing drugs, bribing officials, and all kinds of foolish underhanded tricks, we would disdain him instead of honoring him. A culture exists in every person and in every organization. Wise leaders know this and are aware of the culture of each environment.

Organizational culture is underrated but highly powerful. Shaping it is an art form which should help leaders feel better about "commissioning" a consultant like MG&A to help bring their business artistry to bear on the organizational culture.

The Presidential debate today brought to my attention another piece of the puzzle: Policy. Culture is more powerful than strategy but it isn't more powerful than Policy.

Policy overrides culture and Policy can serve as a petri dish for incubating the right culture. If we set up policies heavily rewarding sales without standards we may find a culture of cheating to win grow. If we set policies that encourage cooperation, we may find teams form. We may find that policies can cut both ways. A policy to reward hard work may backfire when people burn out or have a terrible home life and end up a mess professionally also.

We need to see our policies as the pitri dishes of culture and shape organizational culture intentionally and wisely. We must keep our finger on the pulse of the organization and adjust as slightly or as drastically as necessary.

What did you get out of the debates?
