Israel and Africa Are Getting Easier to Reach, One Route at a Time

Small piece of news that says a lot. Arkia is bringing back direct flights between Tel Aviv and Marrakech starting August 24, after a three year pause. Twice a week, fares starting around 329 dollars.

Why does a flight schedule matter for Israel Africa business? Because deals do not happen over email. At some point somebody has to get on a plane, meet the people, see the operation in person, and shake hands. Every route that reopens between Israel and Africa makes that a little easier.

This is the unglamorous side of the diaspora investment pathway, visas, flight schedules, logistics, but it is exactly what turns years of goodwill into something real.

Keep an eye on the routes. When the planes start flying again, the business usually follows.

Kenya's Geothermal Lead Is Opening a New Kind of Israel Africa Partnership

Here's something interesting. Israel just started exploring geothermal energy for the very first time this year. Meanwhile Kenya already runs on it, getting more than 40 percent of its electricity from geothermal power, more than any other country on the planet.

So who is teaching who here?

Kenya's government has already invited Israeli investment into its geothermal sector, and honestly, this feels like a rare case where Africa is the one with the expertise and Israel is the one catching up. That is a different kind of partnership than we usually talk about, and it is a good one.

This is also a perfect example of what the diaspora investment pathway is all about. Real expertise plus the right capital plus people who understand both sides can move projects forward fast.

What do you think, is this the kind of Israel Africa partnership we need more of? Drop your thoughts below.

Big shift happening between Israel and Nigeria right now, and it is worth paying attention to.

Instead of the usual aid and training programs, the two countries are building something closer to a real business partnership. The i-FAIR program is a great example. Young Nigerian entrepreneurs are getting matched with Israeli and Nigerian mentors to build actual companies, not just attend workshops. There have already been over 1,300 hours of mentorship, and a fifth group of entrepreneurs is set to start in 2027.

At the same time, business leaders on the ground in Abuja are being honest about the gaps. A lot of the trade between the two countries still runs on personal relationships instead of formal agreements, and Nigeria's Ambassador to Israel has made fixing that her top priority.

This is exactly the kind of story IABC follows closely. Africa's relationship with Israel is moving away from charity and toward real investment, the same model that diaspora money helped build for Israel itself. Nigeria is becoming an important test case for what that can look like.

What do you think, is structured investment the right model for African partnerships going forward?

Earlier this month, something quietly significant happened in Abuja that deserves more attention.

The Israeli Embassy in Nigeria partnered with Innov8 Hub and Israeli organization Unistream to run a four-day bootcamp focused on AI and entrepreneurship. Young startup founders, researchers, and innovators came together to learn how to build real businesses using artificial intelligence, with a clear focus on creating jobs, not cutting them.

At the closing ceremony, Israeli Ambassador Michael Freeman made a public commitment: Israel plans to be one of the world's leading AI nations, and it intends to share that knowledge with Nigeria on an ongoing basis. "This was the first time we've done this," he said. "This will not be the last."

This is the Israel-Africa relationship doing what it does best when it works properly: connecting Israeli expertise with African talent and market opportunity. Nigeria brings scale and creativity. Israel brings deep technical know-how. Together, the potential is real.
We've written a full insight piece on what this means and where it fits in the broader Israel-Africa picture. Check the link and share your thoughts in the comments.

Big news happening today and we wanted to share it with our community.

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro is in Jerusalem right now for the first ever state visit by a Somaliland head of state. Israeli President Isaac Herzog welcomed him at the President's Residence this morning, and the two held talks that both sides are calling a historic milestone.

This visit is the result of months of rapid diplomatic progress that started when Israel became the first country in the world to recognize Somaliland back in December 2025. Since then, ambassadors have been exchanged, and this week a Somaliland embassy is expected to open in Jerusalem. Tomorrow, President Irro meets Prime Minister Netanyahu.

What does all of this mean for business? A lot. Somaliland has minerals, lithium, gas, and agricultural resources. Israel has technology, health innovation, and investment networks. Both sides want to turn this relationship into real economic activity, and that process is now well underway.

Today in Jerusalem, history was made

Somaliland's first ever ambassador to Israel, Dr. Mohamed Haji, was formally welcomed by Israeli President Isaac Herzog at the President's Residence. The orchestra played Somaliland's national anthem there for the very first time. It was a ceremony six months in the making, and it marks a significant step in one of the most watched new diplomatic relationships on the African continent.

Israel recognized Somaliland in December 2025, the first country in the world to do so. Since then things have moved fast: a ministerial visit to Hargeisa, water management training for Somaliland officials in Tel Aviv, the appointment of Israel's first ambassador to Somaliland, and now this, a fully credentialed Somaliland ambassador in Jerusalem.

President Herzog said this partnership will lead to cooperation in many fields for the benefit of both peoples and the region. The areas already being discussed include health, agriculture, technology, security, and the economy, alongside Somaliland's significant natural resources and its strategic coastal position on the Gulf of Aden.

At the Israel Africa Business Connect (IABC), we are proud to welcome this development. Formal diplomatic relationships between Israel and African nations are the foundation on which real business partnerships are built. And that is exactly what we work to create every day.

We will keep tracking these developments and sharing what they mean for African governments, investors, and business leaders who are paying attention to where opportunity is forming on this continent.

Kenya Doubles Down on Israeli Defense Tech: What a $47 Million Air Defense Loan Tells Us About Africa's Most Serious Business Partnership

This is a story about a lot more than air defense.

Kenya just secured a $47 million Israeli government loan to acquire additional units of the SPYDER air defense system, manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. It is the second major defense financing deal between the two countries in less than two years, following a first system that was already delivered in December 2025.

The technology is serious. The SPYDER can intercept aircraft, drones, helicopters, and guided missiles. Kenya now joins Ethiopia and Morocco as the only African countries operating it. But what matters most for the business community is what sits underneath this deal.

Kenya and Israel have eight formal cooperation agreements covering health, water, agriculture, the Blue Economy, and digital government. The Israeli ambassador recently met with Kenya's Cabinet Secretary to discuss public service digitalization and knowledge transfer. These two countries are building something real, layer by layer, sector by sector.

At IABN, we look at these developments and see a roadmap. The same trust and structured engagement Kenya and Israel have developed is possible for governments and businesses across the continent. Israeli technology in health, water, agriculture, and cybersecurity is genuinely world class, and Africa's demand for exactly those solutions is growing every year.

This is the work we do at the Israel Africa Business Network. Follow our page for more insight on where the opportunities are forming.
