Magdala English Magdala is a beautiful place people can visit for prayer, worship, learning, and spiritual growth.
(223)

The hometown of Mary Magdalene already provides pilgrims an authentic location to walk where Jesus taught and to connect with the first century life of Jesus’ followers. Magdala is a unique Holy Land site with a first century town where the Jewish residents gathered in a synagogue where Jesus visited and taught. It is home to the beautiful Duc In Altum, which provides a place for worship, mass, and prayer.

DAILY REFLECTION: I REJOICE IN HEARING YOUR VOICE.

Mark 12:35–37 “The large crowd listened to Him with delight.”

We can imagine this scene: a man surrounded by thousands of people who joyfully sit down to listen to Him. How do you picture it? I think of it as a fountain of love, like when you feel such a great emotion that you cannot find the words to describe it.

Have you ever sat down simply to listen to the voice of Jesus?

Before the coming of Christ, people had the Old Testament, which is the ultimate guide to what God desires for us. He wants us to live according to His Ten Commandments. Do you know them? They speak of love, respect, honesty, goodwill, and forgiveness. You can find them in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I highly recommend—it is a wonderful read. It serves as a guide to a lifelong commitment whose purpose is to do good for others.

When God realized that we could not fully understand His words, He did something extraordinary. He chose to become Man so that we could relate to Him. That was when He sent Jesus Christ, His only Son, born of Mary and Joseph through the power of the Holy Spirit, who is also God. We call this the Holy Trinity. It is one God in three distinct Persons so that our human understanding might find answers.

The coming of Jesus was, is, and always will be—because He is eternal—the greatest way God found to help us understand Him. Jesus, as Man, feels, loves, suffers, cries, eats, lives, and sleeps, just as you and I do. He is our Brother, our Friend, and our Father. We encounter Him and can see Him in the person standing before us. We are Jesus! We were created in His image and likeness, and we possess the capacity for the same qualities, gifts, and talents that He has. Yet many people struggle to understand this. How can I be like Jesus, the Son of God? Because we too are children of the same Father. Jesus speaks to us about love. He tells us that when we forgive those who offend us, we receive His love; that when we help those in need, we are helping Him; and that on the Cross, He showed mercy to all of us when He said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

We, who are that crowd spoken of by Mark in this Gospel, listened to Him gladly. But what did we do? We crucified Him! All because we failed to understand when He spoke to us about the love that is lived through forgiveness. And what did He do? He forgave us! Jesus constantly fills us with His love so that we may imitate Him, forgive others, speak of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and bear witness that we recognize Him as the Messiah who came to bring us peace.

Let us draw closer to God through Jesus, who invites us to love others in the same way that He loves us.

Today's Resolution: Today I want to speak about Jesus. I want to share the joy of His message of love, and I want others to understand that God became Man so that we might learn how to forgive, how to love, and how to live together in peace.

DAILY REFLECTION: THROUGH YOUR BODY AND BLOOD, I SURRENDER MY LIFE.

John 6:51–58 “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

In this passage from John's Gospel, the Jews argued among themselves about how Jesus could tell them that they must eat His flesh. Certainly, at first glance, this seems illogical from a worldly human perspective. However, Jesus is speaking about something much deeper—something they neither want to see nor accept. "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

But how can this be?

Pope Leo XIV tells us: “By offering Himself without reserve, the Crucified and Risen One gives Himself to us, and in this way we discover that we were made to be nourished by God. Our hungry nature bears the mark of a need that is satisfied by the grace of the Eucharist. The Eucharist, in fact, is the true, real, and substantial presence of the Savior, who transforms bread into Himself in order to transform us into Him. Living and life-giving, the Corpus Domini makes us—that is, the Church itself—the Body of the Lord.”

Through His death and Resurrection, Jesus gives Himself to us—yes, to you and to me! He sacrifices His existence so that we may have eternal life.
We are nourished by the Word of God and by the Eucharist, which is the living presence of God in our conscience and in our soul. Jesus is the food that nourishes our spirit, and it is through that spirit that we exist and bear witness that He is God, our eternal nourishment. We testify that Jesus offers Himself without reserve; He gives Himself in the Bread and the Wine—which is Christ—life-giving and inexhaustible. In return for Jesus living within us, we must desire to be nourished by faith in the true God. For it is our faith that leads us to hunger for Jesus, and within that desire should also be our longing to live for Him through our actions. We give ourselves in service to others through acts of mercy and compassion when we see our brothers and sisters suffering and in need of our love, trust, and faithfulness to move forward. Perhaps we think we are doing well, without realizing that we too are that brother or sister in need of the kindness and love of others.

That is why, with humility, we must undergo a personal transformation of love, receiving the Bread and Body of Christ as the strength we need to live each day in His presence.

Today's Resolution:

Father, may Your truth be my truth. May my communion in the Body and Blood of Christ lead me to eternal life at Your side.

DAILY REFLECTION: YOU POSSESS THE POWER OF LOVE.

Mark 12:18–27 “You are mistaken because you understand neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.”

Indeed, understanding the Scriptures and the power of God is not a simple matter. It requires a willing heart. Is your heart open and willing for God?

Saint John Paul II tells us: “To interpret Scripture correctly, and especially these words of God, means to know and accept with faith the power of the Giver of life, who is not bound by the law of death that dominates man’s earthly history.” (General Audience, November 18, 1981).

“To know and accept with faith the power of the Giver of life” means that through our faith we recognize that it is God who gives us life, and we personally welcome His power within us. We believe in Jesus Christ as true God and true Man, and in His word of eternal life. We believe that He died on the Cross for our salvation.

Once we recognize the power of God, we can begin to understand the Scriptures. We need to identify ourselves with the person of Jesus—with the Man who suffers and weeps when a friend dies, who heals and restores through the power of His love, who despite our many mistakes has the mercy to forgive us and continually reminds us that we are fertile ground in which He longs to sow His love.

Let us be witnesses of God's love so that we may no longer remain in error and may joyfully proclaim the words that flow from our hearts when Jesus, the Son of God, becomes our inspiration for living.

Today's Resolution: Today I want to open my hardened heart and allow the loving voice of Jesus Christ to enter. Today I want to make a commitment to God to grow in my faith and to listen to His message of peace, love, and forgiveness, so that I may share it with those who walk beside me and have not yet come to know Him.
