Impact Mavens

Impact Mavens Bringing the joy back into the hard work of social change We want to change how social impact is done.

To create the kind of radical, mountain-moving change our world needs right now, we need to nourish the people at the front-lines of change-making. Impact Mavens is on a mission to support women of impact and social change organisations to build clarity of purpose, courageous resilience, and compassionate community. We need foundations of hope, joy, and belonging - in ourselves and in our organisa

tions - to build real social change. Through our workshops, group programs, and one-to-one sessions, we empower social change activists and leaders to bring joy back into the heart of social change.

Hands up if figuring out the "new normal" of work life feels a lot like pin the tail on the donkey? You know, the game where children are blindfolded, spun around and given a tail to accurately place on a picture of a donkey? 😵‍💫

With the great resignation of 2021 gaining more traction, non-profits in particular need to pay attention to how they respond.

👉🏼 Swipe through for 3 ways non-profits can create your own "new normal" and how we can help.

👇🏼 We'd love to know in the comments how you and your organisation are pivoting in response to the pandemic - the good, the bad, and the 🤬!

Your midweek reminder.

Just one of many truth bombs from the powerfully potent Seven Necessary Sins for Women & Girls, by Mona Eltahawy 📖. Her f*ck you to the patriarchy kept me company, and riled me right up, during some much needed, and rebellious, rest.

Shout out to the great for getting this book into my hands.  What should be next on my list?  🤔

Smugness alert 🚨
I’m so delighted with myself that we left our holiday until September. The summer was a hard (and much too grey) slog in Ireland, so I’m more than happy to avoid the intrusion of autumn.

And when I’m on holiday, I’m ON HOLIDAY☀️I take my rest seriously, so here’s a couple of ways that I make sure I get a chance to properly recharge:

✍️Write myself a post-holiday to-do list so that I can stop my brain from cycling through them when I’m lying on the beach.

🗣Make clear to my colleagues and boss that I won’t be checking emails or taking meetings. I’m contactable on what’s app for only the absolutely necessary (and my definition of that is very limited!).

🧽Book the cleaner to come while we’re away so I know we’re coming home to a nice clean space (and fresh sheets).

⏰Schedule nothing and instead try to tune back in to myself and my body - what I want, what I need, what brings me joy - and build our days around that….well as much as is possible with an almost-2 year old who knows she’s the boss.

Who else loves a cheeky September holiday? 🤔🙋‍♀️ and when you’re on holiday are you REALLY on holiday? 🙈😎

The pandemic has brought so many shifts in our lives; how we live, where we work, who we see, and more. We have been forced to slow down and reflect on what matters most. We're reassessing our values and rethinking who and what we give our energy and time to.

A recent survey in America found that 48% of workers are rethinking the type of job they want post-pandemic, and 25% plan to look for a new job with better compensation, work-life balance, and more opportunities for growth. We are witnessing transition on a scale we could never have imagined, and it's not over.

Join us for this Conversations for Change event and together we'll explore how we feel about transition, how it's shaped us, and what influence it has had, or is having, on our social change work.

Guest Speaker: Alinda Vermeer | CEO, Media Defence

Whether you're going through some big or small life transitions yourself, are simply curious about how others are navigating change right now, or are just missing proper deep chats with lovely, brilliant women, you're welcome here.

What part of your life is in transition right now? We'd love to already start digging in to this topic right here in the comments! 👇

Hands up ✋if you've felt a bit blah about your social justice work at some point.  Maybe you do right now?

Disillusionment doesn't feel great, does it? We've been there.  Been through the whole gambit of emotions it brings up; anger, frustration, disappointment, confusion, loss of hope or even betrayal. 🥺😭🤯🥴

But guess what? Disillusionment is actually completely normal and, in fact, it's actually a really good sign!

In social justice work our Theory of Change describes how and why we think change happens.  We use it to guide our focus, energy and resources.

But did you know that you also have your own personal Theory of Change?  It's in your values and intuition, guiding you as you decide what causes to work on and what organisations and people to work with. And as you do the work, you learn what you enjoy, what's effective, where you are making an impact.  You also learn what's not right for you - and that's where disillusionment usually creeps in.

It's a sign that you might need to take some time to reflect on your work and your life, and to evaluate if it still serves you.

Use the questions in these slides to help you explore your own disillusionment and rework your own Theory of Change.  Save this post so that you can refer back to these questions whenever you need to.

What are you feeling disillusioned by right now? 🤔

You've heard us talk about "female change-makers" and "women in social impact" and thought.....nah, that's not me. Here's why you're wrong. 🤔

As women we often down-play our roles and our impact. We shy away from words like "social impact" and "change-maker" for fear that they sound grandiose or big-headed. You imagine the sneers of other people..."who does she think she is?".

Excuse our language, but f*ck that.🤬

Change-makers are the care-givers, non-profit/NGO staff, charity workers, social justice advocates, social entrepreneurs and other jargon-y terms for people that care more about the difference they make than the profit they take.  They see a problem in the world, and are doing something to fix it.

It's Malala and Greta Thunberg, and it's also you;

🌱the charity fundraiser

🌱the owner of the small business that uses their profit to offer free services to the disadvantaged

🌱the anti-racism campaigner

🌱the leader of a human rights NGO

🌱the volunteer in your local food bank

🌿Social change is simply a million small positive actions that create a tipping point. You are a part of that.  ✨YOU are a change-maker. ✨

Downplaying yourself and your impact plays into the capitalist, patriarchal  narrative that the work of care is not valuable because it's not about making money.  That helping others is not significant because it's related to traits that are traditionally seen as female such as empathy and patience. Let's challenge that narrative.  Let's own our impact.

👯‍♀️And we're here to support you with whatever you need as you try to create a life of bold, joyful, balanced impact.

Twinkle lights, dance breaks, and belly laughs. This is what a typical Impact Mavens planning call looks like as we sit on opposite sides of the Atlantic doing the work we love.

And sometimes wine and chocolate make it on the agenda too. We invite you to try it too 😉

Connection isn't a luxury. It's essential.

➡️Scroll through the slides, and let us know what you've tried and what works in the comments below.

Connection isn't a one-time task that you check off your to-do list. You need to nurture it at all levels and on a regular basis - especially as you and your team continue to work from home.

Research confirms that by creating intentional opportunities to connect at work, rather than just at a task or management level, it enables you to build better teams and, together, have a bigger impact on the world. Doesn't that sound grand?

So, we're calling on all you brilliant women of impact to put your people first and deepen your team's connection. Why? To strengthen your organisation's bottom line: social change.

If you want to try something that works, get in touch about our bespoke Joyful Conversations for Teams. We want to help! DM us or access the link in our bio for more information.

Did you grow up being the “strong one”? Holding things together so that others can fall apart? Always vigilant, always one step ahead. You wrapped yourself in your identity of strength and helping, and it led you right into being a professional helper. Sound familiar? Yes, you’re a fierce social justice queen, but in what ways is your “strength” nourishing you? And in what ways is it breaking you? How can you be more willow?

Your impact is only as deep as the connections of your team.

You're on back-to-back Zoom calls all day planning yet another virtual event or discussing a new funding opportunity.

You have colleagues that have never met in person or behind the screen.

You've tried your hardest to keep your team connected and supported throughout the pandemic. Scheduled virtual coffees and happy hours. Organized yoga and meditation sessions. Shared binge-worthy shows.

But it still feels really hard for your team to connect personally.

We know how difficult it's been. We've felt it ourselves.

What would it be like if your team was really connected? Got to know each other on a deeper level beyond the "how was your weekend" or "when can I expect this"?

We've seen how our Joyful Conversations have brought joy and connection to social change-makers and impact organisations across three continents.

And it may just be what your team needs too.

Deepen existing relationships. Spark new collaborations. Thrive together.

We design bespoke experiences to meet the needs of your team. Send us a DM or book a discovery call to find out more - link in bio ✨

We need to change everything we know about 'being strong.'

When you put your energy into staying strong, you're pushing away what’s hard. All those feelings bubbling under the surface are still there, they’re just hidden.

It's like a pay day loan, but for feelings; it bails you out of today's crisis but it's going to screw you tomorrow. With interest.

So if beneath your joy and relief as the glimmers of hope for safe in-person gatherings get brighter, you have shades of sadness, pangs of anxiety, or don't feel like you think you 'should,' know that you're not alone.

One thing we have slowly been realising, and are supporting each other to embrace, is that strong does not equal unfeeling. And it certainly doesn't equal just one feeling. It's allowing yourself to feel all the feels.

In our newsletter, Collective Effervescence, that went out today, we dive into how we're challenging ourselves - as women, as family members, as activists, as human beings in a pandemic - to reconsider what it means to 'be strong.’

We'll share some of the fizzy goodness with you here this week but to dive deep together, DM us your email or click the link in our bio to sign up!

And let us know in the comments or take some time to journal for yourself, what does 'being strong' look like for you when you let your feelings flow? ✨
