The Israel Film Fund, headed by my good friend the talented Dr. Noa Regev, will be holding "FIRST LOOK", its showcase of new films in Manhattan's Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, on June 10th, at 4pm.

The event will feature an intimate showcase of three upcoming Israeli films exploring questions of identity, conflict, belonging, and human connection. Reflecting the cultural tensions and complexities of our time, these films continue the tradition of bold, innovative, and deeply personal Israeli cinema.

These are the new projects that will be presented: (attached the formal invitation)

Title: STUNNING!

Two best friends. One is the bride. One is the problem. When Elka's brilliant best friend is about to make the mistake-of-her-life, the most loving act she can think of is to sabotage the wedding preparations and undermine the bride's determination to marry a half-baked boring man.

Title: You Are My Everything

How far will a mother go to keep her son from war? An anxious Israeli mother flees with her two sons to a ski town in Armenia, just days before her eldest is drafted into an elite commando unit. There, she crosses paths with a Russian mother facing the same fate with her own son – a chance encounter that turns a family getaway into a darkly comic reflection on mothers, sons, and the wars that claim them.

Title: Now More Than Ever

When Harry Met Sally meets the modern Jewish identity crisis. After a clash over campus antisemitism, Miriam, a brilliant Columbia PhD candidate, is suspended. Her only shot at salvaging her academic future is to join a high-stakes U.S. advocacy tour as a chaperone, assigned to Ori, an injured Israeli officer turned “poster boy,” representing a world she has tried to keep at a distance, yet continues to haunt her. As they dodge hostile protests, endure disastrous galas, and bond over late-night junk food, their carefully built defenses begin to crack- sparking an undeniable romance. A film for anyone whose identity was up for public debate and who still dared to fall in love.

On this special day, it is important to remember the great women that positively shaped our lives. Not too many people know that Mother's Day in Israel is named after one very unique American woman - the legendary Baltimore-born Henrietta Szold (1860-1945), who was a major Jewish leader and founder of Hadassah. Though she had no biological children, she is widely known as the "mother of all children" for rescuing tens of thousands of Jewish orphans during the Holocaust. Her legacy forms the historical foundation of Israel's equivalent to Mother's Day.

When she turned 75, New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia honored her at City Hall in 1936. He praised her lifelong advocacy, specifically crediting her early immigrant night schools for his own political success and for saving society from industrial slavery. He famously told Szold: “If I, the child of poor immigrant parents, am today mayor of New York … it is because of you. Half a century ago you initiated that instrument of American democracy, the evening school for the immigrant.” La Guardia went on to say: “I would not be receiving you today as mayor of the City of New York but for the work that you did 50 years ago. Had it not been for those evening classes through which my parents were Americanized we would be facing today a new kind of slavery, an industrial slavery.”

As the Iran War continues, we are getting ready to convene the second session of our series "Israel on Our Minds", at Manhattan's The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center. Are we on the verge of a newly shaped Middle east or will the war produce a more radical version of the existing regime? How will the war impact the internal electoral divisions in both the United States and Israel? We will try to answer these questions, and many more. Please join us for a free and open discussion about the situation.

As the situation between Iran and the "west" is heating up, it is time to re-visit an interview I did some months ago with one of Israel's leading experts on Iran, Dr. Raz Zimmt who is with the INSS - The Institute for National Security Studies Israel and Tel Aviv University USA - AFTAU.

Israel-born Dr. Raz Zimmt is the director of the Iran and Shiite Axis Program at the INSS (Institute for National Security Studies) and a research fellow at the Alliance Centre for Iranian Studies at TAU. He holds master's and doctoral degrees in Middle Eastern history from Tel Aviv University and a bachelor's degree in Islamic and Middle Eastern history from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His doctoral thesis, supervised by Prof. David Manshari and Prof. Eyal Zisser, dealt with Iranian foreign policy toward Nasserism and Arab radicalism between 1954 and 1967.

In this new episode Dr. Zimmt provides an overview of the state of affairs between the west and Iran, with rich historical references and some compelling analysis.

Please share if you like.
