See how modern media links the two. Neither is fake but they are used cunningly to create a buzz.

The heading loudly suggests a co-relation but quietly omits to reveal it.
Objective achieved - sensation by mere suggestion.

Here is another example of human ingenuity and our ability to design novel solutions when right focus and resources are applied.

Ammonia is a key component of the man-made fertilizers. Nitrogen gas from air around us and hydrogen gas synthesized from fossil fuels are reacted to produce ammonia in chemical plants.

This process however is not clean and makes fertilizer industry a very significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientists have now designed an alternative method of ammonia synthesis. This carbon neutral process can be realized at any scale in any part of the world for example on a farm and can be powered by the renewable energy only.

In other words, farmers could manufacture their own fertilizers on their farm!!

Ammonia also has promising possibility as energy storage and transportation medium.

Goals, objectives, targets, KPIs all are fine but without ex*****on they amount to nothing.

I can't overstate the importance of planning and preparation but it will be an exercise in futility if not followed by action. You got to move, and act, in order to reach your goals.

Plans without required actions and commitment of resources remain on paper. They come back to haunt us with regret and remorse for opportunities seen but not taken.

If you have made the effort of planning and if you believe in your plan then stop overthinking and do what needs to be done.

Convert your opportunities - focus on your goals, take required actions, commit necessary resources and stick to timelines.

Remember what Goethe said: - "What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals."

No Limits to Human Ingenuity

When we take antibiotics to treat an infection get distributed all over the body and only a small part of it reaches the intended target area or organ. The rest of them get flushed out of our system in time but usually after causing unintended damage to non targeted areas - what we commonly refer to as side effects.

Targeted delivery systems will increase the availability of the medicine at targeted area and thus it's efficacy while reducing the negative side effects at other areas or organs.

There's no end to human ingenuity if we apply ourselves with energy, enthusiasm and determination. Provided of course that the cause or objective is noble and for the benefit of many and not just few.

Home-based businesses, including free lancing, exploded during the pandemic and the trend doesn't seem to be abating anytime soon.
In US the Home Office Computing Magazine conducts a survey of people who operate home-based businesses. Figures indicate that those who operate such businesses are people who:
average 40 years of age;
are married (75 percent);
have children (70 percent);
are predominantly male (62 percent); and
have worked at home less than 10 years.

The survey also asked why people had given up their regular job and gone into a home-based business. The main reasons given:
wanted to be my own boss ... 51 percent;
wanted to make more money ... 42 percent;
wanted to change my life ... 31 percent;
wanted to spend more time with my family ... 30 percent;
am more productive at home ... 27 percent;
had gone as far as possible in the corporation ... 21 percent; and
hated the commute ... 19 percent.

I wonder what are the figures for India? Are our reasons and their prevalence any different? I seek your opinion and comments. Any link to data and survey results would also be helpful.

Eastern philosophers had a unique way of condensing profound knowledge and ideas into succinct axioms - few words that could mean a world. The Upanishads epitomize pinnacle of Indian philosophy.

What is your deepest desire? Or of your employee? If we can identify and understand those we will understand their motivation or lack thereof. We will have a better understanding of their actions and intent behind those.

I am referring to understanding which empowers us to lead better. I am not suggesting manipulation. Leadership is NOT manipulation.

Leaders and managers are taught that employees are self-interested and work resistant, so they create systems of control to combat these expectations. Workers resent these systems, and performance suffers. To address the performance issues, managers double down on the coercion, creating a vicious cycle and a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But there is a better way. when an authentic higher purpose permeates business strategy and decision-making, the cycle is broken. Employers and employees see themselves as working together toward an inspiring goal, not just trying to hit quarterly targets. They fully engage, become proactive contributors, and, ironically, easily exceed those quarterly targets.

One has to make a concerted shift from a transaction-oriented mind-set focused on constraints to a purpose-oriented mind-set focused on possibility. This shift has to be deliberate and across all levels but has to start from the top and permeate down.

As a leader, you directly set the tone and spirit at the workplace. People below you follow your lead and you have an enormous influence on your employees. You must realize the huge influence you have and use it wisely.

The signals that you send have a great impact on your organization. Your team members look out for these signals and take their cue from you on how to behave and what the organization expects from them.

If your staff sees that you failed to implement a policy, or bend a rule, they will deduce that they can do the same thing.

If you are seen doing things that are good for the company (such as being open to new ideas, techniques, etc.), then your employees will follow suit.

The signals you send tell people how important they are to you and how important the company is.

How your employees perceive work is based on the things you do and what you say. If you demonstrate pride and purpose in your work, they too follow suite. If you are an enthusiastic leader, you will have an enthusiastic work force.

Your tone of voice and choice of words also affect how people perceive you and what you represent. The power of your language affects the morale of your team.
Furthermore, repeat positive words and phrases. This will encourage the people around you to believe in themselves.

As a leader, you need to understand that you can greatly affect people. One of the most important things to remember is that you must learn to back your words with actions. Mean whatever you say, and practice what you preach. Your actions will always speak louder than your words. Be deliberate about your actions and keep them true to your words and your values.

Leadership is influence by example. The nature of example you set determines the kind of following you have and hence the kind of leader you are. The kind of example you set is always up to you – your choice!

Coaches, trainers, influencers, thought leaders - they are so good at taking a mundane video, or photo, giving it some spin to bring out profound insights about life, leadership, success and what have you.

Suddenly a stray dog becomes your guru, teaching you some great lesson that even it was not aware of. And trust me, even now it is blissfully unaware of the great gem of knowledge it has given to you (isn't that a sign of a true giver that they don't have any identify themselves as givers).

Only the guru can reveal the profound knowledge hidden in the banal. And then reduce profound to banal using tired cliches. Copy-paste, copy-paste, copy-paste till it feels that you are physically chewing the copy (paper) and are about to gag.

But we fail to develop this gift into a skill when we fail to choice wisely - and refuse or fail to learn.

We have to recognize that we can influence change and outcomes within any role in our organization – regardless of our position or role.

Secondly, for our organization to deliver on our mission, to have breakthroughs or to be truly innovative, everyone will have to do that actively – to engage and contribute actively.

It is the responsibility of leaders at all levels to empower those they lead to feel and act in this manner. Unless the leaders create an enabling and empowering environment the above wouldn’t happen.
