No Limits to Human Ingenuity

When we take antibiotics to treat an infection get distributed all over the body and only a small part of it reaches the intended target area or organ. The rest of them get flushed out of our system in time but usually after causing unintended damage to non targeted areas - what we commonly refer to as side effects.

Targeted delivery systems will increase the availability of the medicine at targeted area and thus it's efficacy while reducing the negative side effects at other areas or organs.

There's no end to human ingenuity if we apply ourselves with energy, enthusiasm and determination. Provided of course that the cause or objective is noble and for the benefit of many and not just few.

If leaders and managers are taught that employees are self-interested and work resistant, then they create systems of control to combat these expectations. Workers resent these systems, and performance suffers. To address the performance issues, managers double down on the coercion, creating a vicious cycle and a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But there is a better way. when an authentic higher purpose permeates business strategy and decision-making, the cycle is broken. Employers and employees see themselves as working together toward an inspiring goal, not just trying to hit quarterly targets. They fully engage, become proactive contributors, and, ironically, easily exceed those quarterly targets.

As Sir Richard Branson said - "I think if the people who work for a business are proud of the business they work for, they'll work that much harder, and therefore, I think turning your business into a real force for good is good business sense as well."

One has to make a concerted shift from a transaction-oriented mind-set focused on constraints to a purpose-oriented mind-set focused on possibility. This shift has to be deliberate and across all levels but has to start from the top and permeate down.

Investing in capabilities of your employees and team members is a sound strategy and contrary to popular conception it is highly cost effective. The returns - of investing as well as not investing - compound over time.

If you are afraid that the investment will turn into sunk cost if the employee leaves after training, consider the cost to your company if they continue to stay without the requisite capabilities!!

When leaders focus on winning and invest in enhancing the capability of their people, individuals at all levels and in more functions are more willing to contribute. Moreover, the quality of what they offer improves.
People take ownership; they take pride. They feel good about being part of an organization that has a bright future, a place that encourages them to step up, and a place where they can see they are making a difference.

A funny thing about success is that it’s habit forming. When success becomes something to be expected, people begin to count on and invest in it —financially and personally.

Attitudes and behaviors change when employees at all levels share a common belief that their organization is an exciting and fulfilling place to be. Everyone brings their best self to work, and the organization thrives.

It’s a challenge for every organization to attract, retain and motivate employees. If a company succeeds in doing so, employees work with more passion, energy, and enthusiasm. This translates to an increase in productivity and more profit for the company. The key to leading a successful team is to be able to look through the eyes of the staff and team members.

You must assume that everyone wants to do well. It is then important that you give your employees the space and confidence they need to do their jobs.
Do not just bark out orders and expect them to follow. Give everyone the trust and respect they deserve.

A leader's “job” is to create a climate that enables employees to unleash their potential. If you give your people the right tools and the right environment, they can achieve wonders.

Leadership focuses on encouraging people not only to find better ways to do their jobs, but also to enjoy their work. This is the only way to implement lasting change.
A leader should not only know how to lead, he must also know how to follow. He must be open to suggestions and be ready to listen to new ideas.

Furthermore, a leader should make the effort to get to know the people around him. This creates a positive atmosphere that can motivate, encourage and give confidence.

When we were kids we were eager to grow up fast. We would pretend and show that we were older than our true age at that time.

And then one day we started pretending to be younger than our true age. It happened so innocently, subtly that we did not even notice.

Here is a question to ponder upon during the weekend. You could even make a game out of it with your friends and family members. The question is: -

How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?

One of the problems businesses have been facing increasingly of late is that employees do not stay long enough to get any meaningful feedback – some leave or get terminated even before the year is out and the rest immediately after first annual appraisal.

Even if the employee stays on beyond a year, it is very possible that the supervisor or manger may have changed.

Thus they are effectively on their own when it comes to career development. They must learn to identify their weaknesses, uncover their blind spots, and strengthen their skills. We are now in the era of do-it-yourself career development.

How does an employee plan his career development in absence of a feedback – coaching- feedback cycle? How does a manager formally plan and support his team member in this?

I am eager to learn how you are addressing this challenge? As an employee or manager or employer?

We have to recognize that we can influence change and outcomes within any role in our organization – regardless of our position or role.

Secondly, for our organization to deliver on our mission, to have breakthroughs or to be truly innovative, everyone will have to do that actively – to engage and contribute actively.

It is the responsibility of leaders at all levels to empower those they lead to feel and act in this manner. Unless the leaders create an enabling and empowering environment the above wouldn’t happen.

Goethe said: - "What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals."

Goals, objectives, targets, KPIs all are fine but without ex*****on they amount to nothing.

I can't overstate the importance of planning and preparation but it will be an exercise in futility if not followed by action. You got to move, and act, in order to reach your goals.

Plans without required actions and commitment of resources remain on paper. They come back to haunt us with regret and remorse for opportunities seen but not taken.

If you have made the effort of planning and if you believe in your plan then stop overthinking and do what needs to be done.

Convert your opportunities - focus on your goals, take required actions, commit necessary resources and stick to timelines.

Here is another example of human ingenuity and our ability to design novel solutions when right focus and resources are applied.

Ammonia is a key component of the man-made fertilizers. Nitrogen gas from air around us and hydrogen gas synthesized from fossil fuels are reacted to produce ammonia in chemical plants.

This process however is not clean and makes fertilizer industry a very significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientists have now designed an alternative method of ammonia synthesis. This carbon neutral process can be realized at any scale in any part of the world for example on a farm and can be powered by the renewable energy only.

In other words, farmers could manufacture their own fertilizers on their farm!!

Ammonia also has promising possibility as energy storage and transportation medium.

“Can I be honest with you?”

Never use this phrase in any important conversation.

I have heard so many sales people use this phrase or it’s equivalent – such as “Sir, aapko sach sach bataaun?”

This common, relatively innocuous statement like “can I be honest with you” indicates to a customer that previous statements might have been lies.

Please understand how much value customers place upon hearing honest information from a sales person. The quickest way to destroy a sale or a business relationship with a customer is to be dishonest. Have you yourself ever wanted to buy a product from a dishonest vendor. Never.

Take note of this in future business discussions. You will be amazed how often these words are used by sincere people who have not considered how their statements can be misinterpreted.

To start one of these home-based businesses, you don't need a lot of funding -- just energy, passion and the drive to succeed.
