One of the question consultants frequently come across is "Why do I or why does my business/enterprise needs the help of a consultant/advisor to run our company?", the answer for which can be as simple or as complex as the idea of starting a business and turning it into a double digit ROI generating venture.
I would like to answer the question citing the example of the kid of a multi-billionaire business family willing to make his own name who has inherited the wealth of his previous generations and is sitting on a huge pile of cash v/s that of a highly experienced and technically sound salaried person booming with a lot of start up ideas but with no financial backup. Now, does the rich kid has all the resources he needs, the willingness to make it big in the world of entrepreneurship and the right idea as to what and why he wants to do exactly? Yes, he does. Against which, does the salaried person has all the experience of managing the day to day chores, the technical knowhow, and the fire in the belly and sparkle in the eye to make a dream debut in the ocean full of start-ups and undertakings? Yes, he does as well. So what is it that both of these cases are missing?
Both of them in their individual capacity have got with them what the other person is missing. While the first case has the right backing and resources, but is lacking with the ex*****on part, the later one is equipped with the expertise and sound knowledge but falls short with the resources.
The ideal scenario would be if both of them team up and make it big together, right? A dream team, as they say. Unfortunately, the ideal scenarios only exists in textbooks. Most often than not, we come across so many instances in our daily lives where we wonder had this been this way and not that, things would have been so good.
A Consultant's job is to bridge the gap between "what if" and "why not" and use their skills/experience/expertise to fill the void of "how can we do this?" to make it sound more reassuring like "we're here to help you do this."
