Indian Classical Dance forms are female dominant space with a legacy of prominent male players such as C. V. Chandrasekhar (Bharatnatyam), Lachhu Maharaj (Kathak), Raja Reddy (Kuchipudi), Maharaj Bindadin (Kathak), Birju Maharaj (Kathak), etc.

On one hand, the world was wary about gender inequality in the workplace and society in general, and on the other hand, they were the least concerned about the male dancers in the world of Indian Classical Dance. Almost all the sponsors and organisers betting on women dancers is the testimony of the discrimination.

Importance of the percussion instruments can be understood from the Natya Shashtra. Bharata says there are one hundred varieties (suggesting a very large number) of Pushkaras. But, he emphasised, in some fair detail, on the three major types of Pushkaras  (Mridanga, Panava and Dardura). He assigned 116 shloka for the Mrudagam player (Chapt 33). They are called “Avanaddha Vadya”. They find their importance in various occasions such as festivals; processions; auspicious occasions and happy times as the weddings, birth of sons; during expeditionary marches; and, in  a battle where many fighters assemble.

The wind & string instruments were generally played individually or in tandem. Further, Bharatha mentions three groups (Kutapa) of music-performers: Tata, Avanaddha and Natyakrta.

The Tata–Kutapa grouped together with the vocalists, the players on string instruments, and the flutists. Avanaddha-Kutapa included players on percussion instruments such as Mrudanga, Pavana and Dardura. And, Natyakrta-Kutapa was the collection of actors and actresses who take part in the play.

In India, Music in ancient period was looked upon as sacred and religious form. Music was a part of Vedic rituals. During medieval period music was spread among common people and became more secular in nature. The foreign invasions influenced the age old sacred form resulting in the bifurcation of Indian music into Karnatak and Hindustani music systems.
