??? Long-Awaited Camera to Be Unveiled on October 26th??? OR 2023 first quarter??? Sony a7R V Release Date...
: everything we know so far and what we want to see... By Andrew Williams

◆ Where will Sony's 'Resolution' go next???

The V has been tipped to launch very soon – and if you shoot a lot of landscapes, weddings or portraits, it could be one of the most exciting launches of the year. The Sony A7R V(opens in new tab) could be arriving as soon as October 2022 with a record-setting image sensor, as reports suggest that Sony is locked in an arms race with Canon to deliver the world's first full-frame 100MP sensor

Back in the innocent days of 2019, we gave the IV one of our coveted 'product of the year' awards. The impressive 61MP full-frame camera was in many ways a precursor to the , as it managed to combine its high-resolution with relatively rapid 10fps burst shooting.

It was already a safe bet that the Sony A7R V would pack a sensor with greater resolution than the 61MP boasted by its predecessor, the Sony A7R IV(opens in new tab) – particularly since the new Sigma fp L(opens in new tab) also features a 61MP sensor. However, with rumors that the Canon EOS R5S will be a 100MP camera(opens in new tab), it appears that business has just picked up

Sony already has a 102MP full-frame image sensor, the -capable IMX555CQR, which could easily be adapted for the Sony A7R V – and you can expect that Sony will incorporate its usual pixel shift technology to quadruple the resolution when used for still life setups.

So where might take its full-frame 'Resolution' series next? The rumors are pointing towards a Sony release in late November, but its upgrades are less easy to predict. Whereas video-led cameras have a clear upgrade path towards resolution capture, better color depth and higher maximum frame rates, the best direction for the Sony isn't quite as obvious.

📷 85 OR 102 Mega pixel
If the a7R V did boast an 85+ MP sensor, it would be the highest-megapixel full-frame camera, mirrorless or otherwise, of all time. Yet at present, the 61 MP a7R IV already holds that title – albeit alongside the Sigma fp L – so it’s worth asking: How interested is Sony in surpassing its own vaunted technology?

🎥 could feature with a similar cooling heat sink system on a7S III. And the body design is between a mix with a7 IV and a7S III. With this heat sink, Sony a7R V can record 8K videos up to 30 minutes.

🎬 🙅the Sony a7R IV might already lead the pack, but competitors will take advantage of every opportunity to outperform Sony; in fact, a recent rumor suggests that the Canon EOS R1 will leapfrog the a7R IV to become the “new resolution king.” In other words, Sony will need to keep pushing with the a7R V – or risk being outclassed by or

This cameras’ compact, yet versatile body supports the needs of a new generation of content creators and solo shooters looking to capture high quality stills and video all in one camera body.

Imagine having the best of both worlds at your fingertips. A Canon camera with equal parts video and still digital imaging power, all in one compact-and-lightweight package. Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce the Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera, a hybrid, RF-mount 8K camera that has something for everyone. The new camera showcases video formats and features from the company’s award-winning Cinema EOS line, alongside select still capabilities that have made the EOS camera a popular and trusted choice among imaging professionals and enthusiasts alike .

“Imaging professionals are living in a multimedia world. Gone are the days of only needing to be sufficiently equipped and skilled at video or stills,” said Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group. “The squarely takes aim at providing end-users with a solution that can tackle all facets of the ever-demanding multimedia and content production landscape. Canon is confident this all-in-one solution can help improve the workflow for a variety of content creators.”

■ Small, but Mighty

The EOS R5 C camera can record non-stop, uninterrupted 8K/60P thanks to an active cooling system. video delivers outstanding definition and realism with four times the resolution of 4K video, enabling unprecedented capabilities in video expression and highly flexible workflows, such as cropping from 8K footage.

The EOS R5 C camera can record High Frame Rate (HFR) video up to 120P at 4K resolution in 4:2:2 10-bit without cropping the sensor, an ideal option when shooting scenes full of fast-paced action or when the camera is paired with a gimbal or drone. Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF is functional even in HFR shooting. Unlike some cameras where audio is not recorded during HFR shooting, the EOS R5 C camera can record .WAV audio as a separate file from video, virtually eliminating the need for separate audio recording.

The EOS R5 C is the first Canon camera to provide internal 8K (8192x4320) 60P Cinema RAW Light recording. Light is a popular and valuable format found in other Canon Cinema EOS cameras such as the EOS Mark III and EOS Mark II. This feature captures the full dynamic range of the sensor and provides video data with a cinematic look, optimized for advanced grading and HDR, in a more manageable file size than Cinema RAW. Cinema RAW Light now has three newly-developed modes, RAW HQ (high quality), RAW ST (standard quality), and RAW LT (light recording). All three modes are 12-bit regardless of frame rate. The EOS R5 C can also record 8K video in MP4 format, ideal for quicker delivery.

The EOS R5 C supports RAW output via HDMI for ProRes RAW recording with compatible a external recorder . When connecting the EOS R5 C with a supported external recorder, users can shoot in Apple ProRes at up to 8K/30P. Proxy data can also be simultaneously recorded to an SD card in-camera, helping to provide efficient post-production operations.

■ Powerful Still Imaging Performance

With the flip of a switch, the EOS R5 C becomes a familiar force to be reckoned with as a still photography camera. At its core is Canon’s 45-megapixel high resolution, high-speed full-frame CMOS sensor, paired with the equally impressive DIGIC X image processor that provides users an ISO range of 100-51200; expandable to 102400 . Precise focus and lightning-fast speed are cornerstones of the EOS C, featuring Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and high-speed continuous shooting of up to 12 frames-per-second (fps) in mechanical shutter mode and up to 20 fps in silent electronic shutter mode. This allows users to track and photograph split-second movements of even the most elusive subjects. With EOS iTR AF X and 1,053 Automatic AF zones, it is easier than ever to photograph people using Eye, Face and Head Detection AF, or intuitively track the whole body, face, or eye of cats, dogs, or birds with Animal Detection AF . For those with the need for speed, the camera also offers vehicle subject detection to track cars and motorcycles accurately, especially in race-type environments. Connectivity like 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® connectivity is also included for the transfer of still images.

■ Additional Features of the Canon EOS R5 C Camera Include:

Canon EOS R3 is officially its most powerful sports camera ever; Incoming camera has nifty eye-controlled autofocus, too...

The Canon EOS R3 has just been teased in a surprise 'development announcement' from the camera giant – and it's shaping up to be Canon's most powerful full-frame stills camera ever for sports photographers.

The new mirrorless flagship is effectively a cross between a Canon EOS 1D X Mark III DSLR and the Canon EOS R5, combining 1D-series build quality with speedy 30fps burst shooting when you use its electronic shutter. In fact, so powerful is the EOS R3's electronic shutter performance, we're wondering whether it'll need a mechanical shutter at all.

That's unknown at this stage, but one exciting confirmed feature is the R3's new Eye Control Function. Like the similar feature we saw back in the day on the Canon EOS 5 and EOS 3 film cameras, this promises to let you choose an autofocus point simply by looking at it in the viewfinder. It was a little hit-and-miss back in the 90s, but we're excited to try out its new incarnation on the EOS R3.

Exactly when we'll be able to do that, though, remains a mystery – Canon hasn't yet provided a release date for its new mirrorless camera, and there are a lot of missing details, too. For example, it's not yet clear what resolution the EOS R3's new Canon-made sensor will have, or how much the camera will cost.

For now, though, here's everything we do know about the Canon EOS R3, plus our early thoughts on what it means for the fiercely competitive pro mirrorless camera battle.

■> Cut to the chase...
What is it? Canon's new flagship full-frame mirrorless camera for pro sports photographers.
When can I buy it? We don't know yet, as Canon has only made a 'development announcement' for the EOS R3.
What features does it have? Confirmed features for the EOS R3 are that it will have a Canon-developed stacked BSI (backside-illuminated) sensor, 30fps burst shooting with the electronic shutter, an updated version of Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a weather-resistant body, and the ability to let you move autofocus points with your eye through the viewfinder. We don't yet know its sensor's resolution, or its price.

■> Canon EOS R3 release date and price >>>
No official release date or pricing yet
Could go on sale in time for the Tokyo Olympics
Price expected to be nearer EOS 1D X Mark III than EOS R5

Canon hasn't yet revealed when the Canon EOS R3 will be fully launched or available to buy. This is just a development announcement, but if the Canon EOS R5 launch is anything to go by, we can expect it to arrive on shelves within the next three-to-six months.

The Canon EOS R5 development announcement was in February 2020, and that camera became available to buy in July 2020, so there was a five-month wait for that model. That said, the Canon EOS R3 would be an ideal camera for sports photographers to take to the Tokyo Olympics, which are due to start on July 23 – so it's possible that the R3 will get a slightly quicker turnaround.

How much will it cost? Again, Canon hasn't yet given any official indication. What the camera giant has said, though, is that the Canon EOS R3 sits somewhere in between the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III and the Canon EOS R5, so we can make some educated guesses as to the price based on those two cameras.

The 1D X Mark III's body-only launch price in January 2020 was $6,499 / £6,499 / AU$9,999, while the EOS R5 arrived more recently, in July 2020, for $3,899 / £4,199 / AU$6,899.

Given that the EOS R3 in many ways combines the best of both cameras, and has a brand-new sensor, we'd expect it to be closer in price to the former of those two cameras, but we'll have to wait for the full announcement to know for sure.

■> Canon EOS R3 specs and features...
Has a new Canon-developed stacked BSI CMOS sensor. 30fps burst shooting with AF/AE tracking
New Eye Control Function for moving AF points with your eye

Canon has revealed some of the EOS R3's key features, but a lot remains unknown. In music festival terms, we know a couple of the headliners, but a lot of the lineup is filled with question marks.

There are five big, confirmed acts though. Firstly, the EOS R3 will have a new Canon-developed stacked BSI (backside-illuminated) CMOS sensor. This is interesting for a couple of reasons. It's been made by Canon, for a start, so should integrate nicely with the camera's Digic X processor.

■> CANON EOS R3 SPECS:
> New Canon-made MSI stacked CMOS sensor
> Digic X image processor
> 30fps burst shooting with AF/AE tracking
> Eye Control Function (for eye-controlled AF)
> Dual Pixel CMOS AF
> 1D-series weather resistance

But the big news is that this full-frame sensor will have a 'stacked' design, like the chip seen in the Sony A1, and the one Nikon has promised for its incoming sports flagship, the Nikon Z9. The benefits of stacked sensors are their speedy data read-out speeds, which generally means fast burst shooting and autofocus speeds.

What we don't yet know is what resolution the EOS R3's sensor will be. Given that Canon is billing it as a "high-speed" camera that can shoot at 30fps continuously, we reckon the EOS R3 is likely to be on the lower end of the megapixel scale. For example, the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III and Canon EOS R6 both have 20.1MP sensors, so the EOS R3 may fall in between those models and the 45MP EOS R5. Again, we can expect Canon to reveal all in the next few months.

Perhaps more interesting are the Canon EOS R3's autofocus powers. Canon has promised that the camera will have next-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF that can track your subjects' eyes, heads and bodies at high speeds. Intriguingly, Canon has said that it will add a new subject to the camera's AF tracking, but that this is "yet to be disclosed". So far, its high-end cameras can track humans, animals and birds – so what's next, insects perhaps? Now that would be impressive.

Whatever that new subject-tracking feature is, it might just be overshadowed by the EOS R3's other autofocus trick: Eye Control Function. What is it? Well, back in the days of film cameras like the Canon EOS A2E (known as the EOS 5 outside the US) and Canon EOS 3, Canon had a feature called 'eye-controlled autofocus' that let you choose an AF point simply by looking at it in the viewfinder.

It was a highly impressive technology for the time, and Canon has promised a "new and improved" version of it for the EOS R3. The main benefit of the feature is that it's potentially quicker to nail your focus point than using buttons; and while the original incarnation of the tech was renowned for being a little hit-and-miss, we're excited to try out Canon's new Eye Control Function on the R3.

Aside from that new Canon-made sensor and those autofocus powers, the fourth big new feature announced for the EOS R3 is that it'll be able to shoot 30fps with full autofocus tracking and auto-exposure when you use the electronic shutter. That's an impressive headline feature that theoretically matches the Sony A1's top shooting speed, but it comes with a lot of caveats.

Firstly, Canon hasn't said whether or not this involves an image crop, or what kind of files will be supported at the top 30fps speeds – on the Sony A1, for example, you can shoot compressed raw and JPEGS, but not uncompressed or lossless raw files. Also, burst shooting speeds are dependent on what lens you're shooting with, so it's not clear which lenses will support 30fps shooting.

Still, the Canon EOS R3 is certainly shaping up to be a speedy mirrorless alternative to the EOS 1D X Mark III for pro sports snappers. We don't yet know what kind of video it will shoot, what its resolution will be or how much it will cost – but one final thing we can be pretty sure of is that it'll have bomb-proof build quality...

■> Canon EOS R3 design and build >>>
Same durability and weather-resistance as EOS-1 series
Integrated grip for pro-level handling and battery life
No news yet on the R3's electronic viewfinder
So far, Canon has only released two front-on photos of the EOS R3, but there are a couple of things we know about the camera's design.

First, Canon is promising that the R3 will have the same level of dust- and water-resistance as its classic EOS-1 series DSLRs. These are renowned for being almost indestructible professional cameras, so that's good news for the R3's durability.

As you can see in the photos, the R3 also has an integrated grip, which isn't just there for comfortable handling – it also houses a big battery that should keep the camera going far longer than most current mirrorless cameras. It might struggle to manage the 1D X Mark III's 2,850 images per charge, but we're expecting a huge improvement on the EOS R5's meagre 320 shots when using the EVF (or 490 shots if you're using the LCD).

As important as battery life for pro sports shooters is the viewfinder, but so far Canon hasn't provided any details about the EOS R3's EVF. We are expecting big things, though, given that Canon touted the "optical viewfinder experience" of the 1D X Mark III as one of the strengths the R3 will inherit from its DSLRs. So expect a viewfinder with a very high resolution and refresh rate, which will be up to the demands of pro sports shooters who can't afford to miss a millisecond of action.

■> Canon EOS R3 lenses >>>
Of course, for pro photographers the lenses are just as important as the camera body – which is why Canon has also announced two pro telephoto lenses, plus the first true RF macro lens, alongside the Canon EOS R3.

You can read more about those in our separate story on the RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro, 400mm f/2.8L IS USM and 600mm f/6L IS USM lenses. But the short summary is that the new 'white lens' telephotos are effectively mirrorless ports of Canon's EF equivalents, only this time with slightly improved autofocus performance and potentially better image stabilization.

For those who can't quite manage their eye-watering price tags, though, the RF 100mm f/2.8L looks the more intriguing lens. It brings a minimum focusing distance of only 8.6cm and comes with a new Spherical Aberration (SA) control ring for softening different parts of your image and creative effects.

While the RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM and 600mm f/6L IS USM will undoubtedly be perfect partners for the new Canon EOS R3, that new RF 100mm f/2.8L looks like it'd be at home with all members of the EOS R family, including the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6.

■> Canon EOS R3 early thoughts >>>
The Canon EOS R3 is something of a surprise announcement. Recently, the rumor mill has mainly been talking up the possibility of a Canon EOS R1 flagship – so does the arrival of the R3 mean we now won't see an R1?

Not necessarily. From the specs we've seen so far, it feels like the Canon EOS R3 is more like a supercharged, pro-friendly version of the Canon EOS R6, rather than the high-megapixel, 8K-shooting flagship we're expecting the rumored R1 to be.

In this sense, the Canon EOS R3 is likely to be more of a rival to the Nikon Z9 than the Sony A1. And like Nikon's camera, it's something of a watershed moment that will see professional sports photographers move from the DSLR format to mirrorless.

We're still expecting to see Canon reveal its answer to the Sony A1 at a later date, but for now the Canon EOS R3 is an exciting glimpse of where its high-speed sports cameras are headed.

The next 𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥 could be significantly more powerful👍 most recent reports, 𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥 production is stopped and 𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗜𝗜 production line is on... the company will release not one but two new full-frame mirrorless cameras in the first half of this year: the ultra-high-speed/resolution Canon #𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥𝟏 we reported on last week, and the 𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗜𝗜.

The Canon 𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥 is over three year + old, but rumors are already circling that a Canon 𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗜𝗜 will launch next year with #𝗜𝗕𝗜𝗦 (in-body ) and a range of other spec boosts that'll push it further into 'pro' territory.

According to the usually-reliable Canon Rumors, the will combine 𝗜𝗕𝗜𝗦 and video with Dual Pixel AF and 12fps burst shooting. There's no mention of whether or not the latter includes AF/AE locking, though we'd imagine it doesn't considering the 𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥's peak 8fps continuous shooting was without focus tracking.

That isn't the end of the rumored new features either, with a new 32-megapixel sensor, extended ISO 100-51,200 range and Canon's new Digic X processor apparently also likely to be on board.

That Digic X processor was recently debuted in the Canon 1DX Mark III and is a fairly significant new processor, given it supports Canon's new 'Deep Learning' autofocus. This allows it to go beyond traditional Face and Eye Tracking by locking onto faces, even when they're obscured by things like helmets or even turned away from you.

√ CFExpress yourself
One final surprise inclusion on the rumored specs is a slot, which will apparently sit alongside a standard SD card slot.

Promising even better performance than the the XQD cards seen in the likes of the Nikon Z6, cards are a new format that's particularly great for shooting action and sports, thanks to their impressive write speeds.

The downside is that they're currently very expensive, which is perhaps why Canon might include it alongside a standard SD slot. It would also help silence the many critics of the 𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥, who complained that it only had one SD card slot.

These specs are all very much rumors right now, and with no other 𝗘𝗼𝘀 𝗥 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗜𝗜 leaks, it would seem a possible successor to Canon's mirrorless flagship is still a little way off. But with several new lenses planned for 2023, the inclusion of IBIS and the company's new Digic X processor would certainly make a compelling mirrorless combination that could take the camera crown back from in our best cameras list.

Sony is going for the Canon EOS-R5 kill: New Sony A9x camera with ~50 Megapixel and 8K30p video is coming in Q1 2021|| September 24, 2020...

So folks, at first I called this rumor bu****it because I didn’t trust the source of the info and odd timing (right after A7sIII launch). But now reliable sources who also gave me the correct A7sIII rumors confirmed this camera is real (although with some changes on the other rumor…like price info and additional Megapixel info). So here is what they told to me:

Sony will launch a new High End camera in Q1 2021
It will be named as an A9x series camera and not A7x (not sure if it’s “A9s” or “A9III”)
It has a new ~50 megapixel sensor.
8k30p video confirmed with no overheating. It’s still an “infant” 8k mode…meaning it’s not 8k60 which would be crazy and there will be limitations in the quality you can record internally.
Other specs similar to A7sIII (EVF, autofocus, and so forth).
At least $1,500 more expensive than the EOS-R5 (but price hasn’t be finalized yet) Expect something like $4,999-$5,499
Apparently Sony wants to show they can outperform the EOS-R5. And they do not consider it a threat to A7sIII sales because of the way more expensive price. This camera is also meant for the use at the Olympics (so I have been told) which seems to suggest that this might be more of a A9II successor on steroids.

The sources will try to give me some more hints the coming weeks…stay tuned on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and chat with me live on Discord to not miss any rumors!!!
