New Rules to do Studies in Canada

Student Direct Stream (SDS) Program which streamlines the process for Philippines, Vietnam, China & India:

What is Student Direct Stream (SDS) Program

Some international students can get their study permits faster by using the Student Direct Stream. If your application is complete, it can be started reviewing by Immigration right away.

If your application meets the regular study permit criteria but not the Student Direct Stream criteria, it will be reviewed as a regular study permit but you won’t get faster processing.

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) Program is a program that will speed up the processing for the full-time studies attending universities and colleges in Canada for students of India.

SDS Program Requirements

Students applying for a program under SDS must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Admission to a full-time program in a publicly-funded post-secondary institution such as universities, colleges, institutes or CEGEP;

An IELTS score with a minimum band of 6 for each ability (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) taken within past two years;

Purchase of a special Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from Scotiabank of CAD$10,000 to cover living expenses;

Proof of payment of the tuition fee for one (1) year; AND

Upfront medical examination at least one week before submission of the application.

Want to go straight to reading about Canadian student visa requirements for your country? Check out a few examples below:
 Turkish students applying for Canadian visa;
 Indian students applying for Canadian visa;
 Iranian students applying for Canadian visa;
 Nigerian students applying for Canadian visa.

Now, let's see, what are the steps to go through to get the Canadian student visa?

1. Decide on a university to apply to and get your acceptance letter
If you’re still not sure where you want to study in Canada, you will have to decide before you can start your student visa application process. After being accepted at a Canadian university, you’ll get an acceptance letter required for visa application.
Find the right universities depending on the discipline you want to study:
 Masters in Environmental Sciences in Canada;
 Masters in Psychology in Canada;
 Masters in Computer Science in Canada;
 Masters in Electrical Engineering in Canada;
 Masters in Medicine in Canada;
 MBAs in Canada;
 Masters in Communication Sciences in Canada.
Consider some of the best universities in Canada:
 University of Toronto;
 Athabasca University;
 University of British Columbia;
 University of Winnipeg;
 York University;
 Simon Fraser University;
 McMaster University.

2. Check if you need a student visa for Canada
You don’t need a study visa (or study permit) for Canada if you are in one of the following situations:
 You are a family or staff member of a foreign representative in Canada, who is accredited by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada.
 You enroll in a programs that lasts less than six months
 You are a member of foreign armed forces from the Visiting Forces Act
 You are a citizen of another country, but you have an Indian status registered in Canada
However, you will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to fly to Canada.

3. Apply for the Canadian student visa
As soon as you got the acceptance letter from the university, it is time to proceed to the next step: applying for a student visa, which is locally known as a student permit.
The first steps to obtain your student visa:
 Apply online for your Canadian student visa, on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website before you arrive in Canada;
 In countries with limited internet access it's also possible to apply for visa on paper;
 Provide an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (a university recognized by the Canadian government);
 Deliver proof of sufficient financial resources to support your studies in Canada (tuition fees and living expenses);
 Have no criminal record;
 Submit clinical records that state you are in good health and complete medical examinations if required.
According to recent visa regulations, if you have a family member working or applying for a work permit in Canada, the application for your study permit will be processed in two weeks. You may renew or extend your study permit, if you wish to continue your studies or if your program has an extension or if you change your school. The study permit expires ninety days after your studies are finished when you receive a notification of the program completion.
Useful tip: check out if your country is on the list of biometrics requests for the study permit.

4. Prepare all required documents for the student visa in Canada
 Completed application form;
 The original letter of acceptance from the university;
 A valid passport/travel document, which also allows you to return to your home country. If you live in the U.S.A., this is not necessary;
 Two recent passport-size photographs, with specifications of name and date of birth on the back;
 Proof of financial support during your studies that represent: tuition fee + 833 CAD/month (for all provinces, except Quebec) or tuition fee + 917 CAD/month (Quebec);
 A letter of explanation;
 If you intend to study in Quebec, you will also need a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec, English and French translations for your document, a statement from the translator and a certified copy of the original documents;
 Proof that you paid the study permit fee (150 CAD).

5. Language requirements for my study in Canada
Unless you come from an English-speaking country, Canadian universities will require you to submit proof of English language proficiency. Accepted language tests are:
 IELTS
 Cambridge English: Advanced
 TOEFL
Proof of your language skills is not included on the list of required documents for a Canadian student visa. But it is a good idea to have some proof of English ability, just in case.

6. Biometrics appointment and interview
Depending on the requirements for your country, you might have to show up at a Visa Application Centre in your country to have your biometrics taken. The biometric fee is 85 CAD. This fee is in addition to the regular visa fee. Some countries are exempt from the biometrics visit, so it's likely they won't need to visit an application centre at all.

What Are The Chances Of Getting Canadian PR With CRS Score 400-450?

Are you an express entry applicant with low CRS Score (400-450), waiting for your ITA (invitation to apply) for Canadian PR?
Well, you are not alone, as there are hundreds of applicants registered on express entry waiting for their turn with the similar score. However, looking at the draw results this year, obtaining the ITA with low CRS score is really difficult. So,

what are the options you have in that case?
Let’s try to find out the pathways that can get you Canadian PR in the current situation.
See if you can improve your profile
There are always few things, which you can improve in your profile to increase your total point score in express entry system, such as, language ability score, work experience, qualification, spouse credentials, etc. However, in this case you will have to wait for few months so that you can improve these aspects of your profile and subsequently the Express entry CRS Score. Moreover, once you have improved your profile, you have an option to either update your profile or create a new express entry profile at any point of time.
However, if you feel there is not further improvement can be done in your profile, you must look out for other options apart from express entry to get the PR Visa for Canada.

Look beyond express entry system
Though, express entry is the popular way of obtaining PR in Canada, however, it’s not the only pathway to move to Canada. Hence, even if your point score is low, you can still try applying in other immigration programs of Canada, with relatively easy process requirements. Let’s take a look at the immigration program you can apply:

• Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)
The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is the provincial nominee program (PNP) of the major Canadian province, Ontario. The PNP invites application for PR and subsequently, allocate the nomination certificate to the selected candidates, which in turn make them eligible to apply for Canadian PR. The OINP in fact considers the candidates with low CRS Score.

• Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP)
It’s the immigration program of Quebec Province in Canada. It invites candidates to apply for PR visa in Quebec, Canada. The QSWP has its own point based system and it provide many relaxations as well to the applicants, i.e. no job offer required, low language proficiency requirement, etc.

• Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP)
The Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) is another popular Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) of Canada. It is also known for providing easiest pathway for Canadian PR to the Canada immigration aspirants with no job offer requirement and low language proficiency level required under its International Skilled Worker- Occupation in Demand Sub-category.
If you apply in any of the above mentioned Canadian immigration programs, you can consider your chances even with low CRS score, as every province in Canada has its own immigrant selection criteria and system.
