Scientists Urge World to Stop Killer Robots at Davos
The world must act quickly to avert a future in which autonomous robots with artificial intelligence roam the battlefields killing humans, scientists and arms experts warned at an elite gathering in the Swiss Alps.
Rules must be agreed to prevent the development of such weapons, they said at a January 19-23 meeting of billionaires, scientists and political leaders in the snow-covered ski resort of Davos.

Angela Kane, the German UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs from 2012-2015, said the world had been slow to take pre-emptive measures to protect humanity from the lethal technology.

The deployment of autonomous weapons would represent a dangerous new era in warfare, scientists said.

Asus launched the ZenFone Zoom smartphone at an event in Agra on Friday. The Asus ZenFone Zoom is the "world's thinnest smartphone with 3X optical zoom" and it comes to India carrying a price tag of Rs. 37,999. The phone is now available to purchase via Flipkart, and will be available via Asus stores starting February. A bundle of the smartphone alongside the ZenFlash and a Manfrotto-branded portable tripod will be available at a later date at Rs. 39,999.

Asus has managed to pack optical zoom into a phone that is impressively thin for its function.

The communications services companies of the two Ambani brothers on Monday announced agreements for trading and sharing of scarce airwaves, or radio frequency spectrum, in the 800MHz band, covering virtually the entire country. A roaming agreement is also on cards.

The pact for trading involves a change in spectrum allotment from the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications to Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio over nine circles and that for sharing between the two companies covers 17 circles, the two entities said.

Smartphone maker Xiaomi Inc said on Friday it had shipped more than 70 million handsets in 2015, undershooting its own target and casting doubts about the growth prospects of China's most valuable tech startup in a cut-throat market.
The figure was announced in a photo featuring Xiaomi President Lin Bin which was posted on the company's microblog with the banner: "2015 Xiaomi cellphone shipments: Over 70 million!"

Xiaomi had estimated total annual sales of 80-100 million, but then in July reported semi-annual sales that for the first time were lower than the previous six months, with analysts saying its main domestic market was rapidly becoming saturated.

It was the year smartphones saved Santa.
As expected, numbers out Friday from research firm comScore confirmed mobile shopping, which includes smartphones and tablets, jumped in November and December, spurring on holiday retail sales this year.

Online shoppers are increasingly comfortable with shopping on smartphones as screen sizes get larger and shopping apps get better.

"I believe that we've seen a paradigm shift in 2016 where the future of retail will increasingly be defined by consumers' behavior on mobile," said comScore chairman emeritus Gian Fulgoni.

Total online spending during November and December rose 13 percent to $69.08 billion (roughly Rs. 4,62,074 crores) from $61.29 billion (roughly Rs. 4,09,967 crores) last year, slightly short of the 14 percent rise comScore, based in Reston, Va., was expecting.

Spending on desktops rose 6 percent to $56.43 billion (roughly Rs. 3,77,458 crores), short of comScore's expectations of an 8 percent rise to $58.3 billion (roughly Rs. 3,89,967 crores).

But mobile commerce helped make up some of that shortfall. Shopping on smartphones and tablets jumped 59 percent to $12.65 billion (roughly Rs. 84,615 crores), well above the 47 percent rise comScore was expecting.

More and more phone brands in India are looking at special sales and online-only products, but Gionee has steadfastly followed a different approach. Its focus is still largely on offline retail in India and it doesn't allow online sales unless e-commerce players agree to sell at the price set by the brand.

Brands such as Obi Worldphone, OnePlus, Qiku and Xiaomi are going for either online-only or largely online sales strategies. However, Gionee President William Lu says he's going to stick to his plan.

Gionee CEO William Lu and India head Arvind Vohra spoke to Gadgets 360 about the company's plans for India.
