Two of this year’s Nobel Prizes started as basic science and needed a long runway.

Optogenetics took a light-sensitive protein from green algae and turned it into a way to switch specific brain cells on and off. IceCube, first proposed in 1988, now listens for high-energy neutrinos from a cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice.

Deep tech runs on a similar clock. Hard technology takes years of patient work before it is useful, and the founders building it need capital and operating support that can wait.
