The North-East zone of the house is known as the Ishaan corner and has always been attributed special importance and significance as this is the head of the Vastu Purusha. Lord Shiva resides here and the ruling element is water. This zone can affect your physical and mental health and thus, should always be kept clean and free of heavy objects. Its also considered the entry point of divine energy into any space which makes it the ideal location to have an altar and carry out spiritual practices / worship. Strengthen the water element here by keeping a fountain, fish tank or even just a bowl of water with crystals. The fluid nature of water carries divine energies from here to the rest of the space.

North is ruled by Lord Kubera, the God of Wealth and also governed by the planet Mercury. The Importance of Directions in Vastu

The principle of Vastu depends on the arrangement and re-arrangements of the five elements: earth, water, fire, air and space to achieve harmonious living. Each direction has a presiding deity which in turn has its own particular characteristic.

Among the directions, East and North hold a special places. The East, because the of the rising sun, our main source of energy, and the North is the roof of the world and the magnetic pole as well.

Space is the distance between and the source of all matter in the Universe. It is subtle and, in some ways, analogous to air.

Vastu can be applied at two distinct phases of construction: new design and while correcting existing designs - initiation and correction, perhaps.

Initiation: There is already a natural order existing in a place where a new building is to be built. It is important to blend in with this order harmoniously. Only a design which adapts to the existing rhythm will satisfy the basic needs of the occupants.

Correction: The space already exists and there is a pattern of energy within that space. So, it is important to remember that whatever is added has to essentially create new patterns within the existing form. The existing patterns must be studied deeply before suggesting new ones.

Air is the element of new life and possibilities. Air is movement, air is fresh. It is invisible but it’s presence is celebrated while its absence is regretted.

Vastu promises physical, psychological and spiritual comfort. It should be practiced more for achieving fuller living than with the intention of material gain.

Water is the ‘primal liquid’. It symbolises the flowing of new opportunities in life. Immunity and clarity of thought are also associated with it.

In the olden times, the process of building a house was a balanced, simple and natural affair. Form, function and inspiration blended smoothly to create a spiritually satisfying experience filled with contentment. Built with local materials, homes resonated with nature’s gentle rhythm; an order was unconsciously followed in every construction.

Such is the order and harmony that has sprung up from the traditional principles or Vastu design:

-A building should be useful to the inhabitants.
-A building should be pleasing to the eye of the beholder with charming exteriors.
-It should be spiritually satisfying.

Vastu Shastra or Vastu Shilpa Shastra as it was once called is a complex body of architectural knowledge and the art of honoring the space enclosed within an architectural form.

‘Vastu’ can be roughly translated to ‘living space’, while ‘Shastra’ is ‘scientific treatise’. The wisdom of our forefathers, along with their deep understanding of building and sculpture, has been immortalized in many ancient texts. These texts, written in Sanskrit and other languages of the day, contain discourse on iconography (the study of structures such as ‘yantras’ and ‘mandalas’, iconometry (the study of quantitative specifications) and rituals for community living.

Traditional Vastu speaks of the mystical connection between individual and the larger living entity. It hails the Earth as the source of all life. Vastu is any life energy residing in earth and Vaastu is the plane that supports it. According to tradition, the earth is both Vastu and Vaastu as it both contains and supports life.
