People might think we're exaggerating when we say dogs are the best sort of mind-readers but ask a dog owner about it and they wouldn’t disagree. It seems like they have hacked into your cognitive processing system to know what exactly goes on in your brain and they’re always ready to act upon it.
In one unidentified experiment, people were placed behind glass doors that were loosely closed. They were asked to smile and in the meantime, their pet dogs were released from an inner room. They ran up to the door but made little attempts to go beyond it. However, in the second phase, the people were instructed to pretend crying. The former act was repeated but this time the dogs tried to push open the glass barrier between them and their owners, in an attempt to console the sad.
How?
Their superpower lies in their nose, which research has proven to be multiple times stronger than a human one. Infact, one-third of their brain cells are part of their olfactory functioning. When we are exposed to some sort of stressor, it initiates some internal physiological changes like increase in heartbeat. This leads to release of hormones like Adrenaline and Cortisol that prepares the body to face the situation. It is said that, albeit internal, dogs have the capability of smelling these physiological changes and act upon it.
