Poor sanitation contaminates drinking water, rivers, beaches and food crops.
Lack of treatment of human excreta affects us all and damages the world we share. We urgently need to strengthen the massive government backed toilet building programmes with decentralised wastewater management systems.

Integration of Wastewater management in and is the need, especially now with greater emphasis on cleanliness, hygiene and health. needs to adopt and quickly.

contributes to wastewater management at those scales which fall out of the centralized treatment approach, and thus provides an holistic approach to wastewater management, treating both the black water as well as the grey water.

Covid - 19: Significance and impact of the pandemic for the water sector - webinar presented by KWR Water Research Institute, Netherlands earlier today. Prof. Rosina Girones, Research Group Leader, University of Barcelona, and Prof. Gertjan Medema, Principle Microbiologist, KWR, share findings of research on the stability of Covid-19 in water and wastewater.
Key findings:
1. Stability of virus measured to be 2 days above 20C, and reduces to 5 min at 70C;
2. Covid-19 stable in aerosols;
3. Covid-19 stable at a wide range of pH: 3 - 10;
4. Covid-19 susceptible to standard disinfectants.
5. Hydrophobicity of virus means high tendency to adhere to solids.

Relevance to onsite-sanitation systems:

Most of the non-sewered areas generally have no-site sanitation systems like septic tanks and pits which take in only blackwater. Accordingly, for blackwater:

a. Septic tanks, in areas with ambient temperature above 20C are ok, and ensure desludging only after 2 days post fill-up.
b. Ensure that the overflow to the drain does not short-circuit. Blackwater must pass through the two chambers before going out of the septic tank

Greywater:
a. Please ensure there is no direct discharge of greywater to open drains.
b. Greywater is best managed with a constructed wetland based treatment system or at least with a sub-surface drainage system to a garden.
