Zuari expanding network of farmer-centric stores

Zuari Agro Chemicals Limited (ZACL), which has a 10 per cent share of the Indian fertiliser market, has chalked out plans to work more closely with farmers by opening more agri-input service centres, a top company official has said.
ZACL, which currently has 300 own-operated Jai Kisaan Junctions, will increase the number of such centres to 500 by the financial year end and to 1,000 over the next two years, said Suresh Krishnan, Managing Director, Zuari Global Limited, the holding company of ZACL.

While almost 90 per cent Jai Kisaan Junctions are in Karnataka and Maharashtra, where ZACL has a strong presence, the company recently set up 30-odd centres in Uttar Pradesh. The next stop will be Odisha and West Bengal, he said. A typical Jai Kisaan Junction, named after the company’s famous brand of close to half a century, is a 1,000-sq ft-space where farmers can avail of farm-related information, buy inputs and get several farm services including soil testing. Whenever needed, these stores — which follow a hub-spoke model — remotely connect farmers with experts from diverse fields for proper guidance.

“Considering that we mainly deal with wholesalers of fertiliser products, we have largely been a B2B company. In the last two years, we have been making an attempt to understand the needs of farmers better through Jai Kisaan Junctions,” Krishnan told BusinessLine recently.

“We believe that the serious reach to the farmer and the last mile connectivity — both to provide him knowledge and service and the inputs along with that — will go a long way in serving our farmers,” he said. These stores are manned mainly by locally-sourced agronomists together with store managers.

He also admitted that knowing the farmers, who are their ultimate customers, will help the company to develop more suitable products for them.

Naveen Kapoor, President-Agribusiness, at Zuari Global, said that there has been a 4 per cent increase in the offtake of phosphatic and 6 per cent of potassic fertilisers last year, while the urea sales were slightly down.

“The sale of urea in 45-kg bags will have a positive impact as it may help improve skewed nutrient management of soils in the country,” he said.

IFFCO launches e-commerce platform for farmers; eyes $5 billion sales in 2 years

IFFCO iMandi is a 'one stop shop' for agri inputs and produce, FMCG, electronics, loans, insurance etc.

Fertiliser major IFFCO has partnered with Singapore-based technology firm iMandi to start an e-commerce platform for farmers with an investment of about Rs 80 crore. An e-commerce app, 'IFFCO iMandi', has been launched that would cater to 5.5 crore farmers already associated with the cooperative. A web portal has also been developed.

IFFCO's subsidiary IFFCO eBazar Ltd has taken 26 per cent stake in iMandi Pte Ltd. The remaining 74 per cent is with I-tech Holdings and some other investors

"After spearheading the campaign across India to sensitise the farmers about the use of online and digital transactions, we are proud to come up with an app ‘IFFCO iMandi'. It is a 'one stop shop' for agri inputs and produce, FMCG, electronics, loans, insurance etc," IFFCO Managing Director U S Awasthi said.

iMandi would address all needs of the farming community and aims to cater to captive user base of 55 million farmers, he added. The app was launched here yesterday.

V K Agarwal, founder of iMandi Pte, said about $12 million has already been invested to launch this app and portal while another $18 million would be infused to add more features, including the facility for farmers to sell their produce.

"We are targeting to reach GMV (gross merchandise value) of $5 billion in the next two years," he added.

iMandi is available for download at Play Store and App Store for Android and iOS phones and accessible on web at www.iffcoimandi.in.

Apart from buy-sell options, the app has features like communication (chat and calling), entertainment and information/advisory content to keep the farmers engaged.
Under the agri inputs marketplace, farmer can presently buy all IFFCO products, including fertilisers, agro chemicals and seeds at a discounted price and get free delivery at their doorstep.

In the near future, IFFCO's Marketing Director Yogendra Kumar said farmers will also be able to sell their produce online at the best prices.

Delhi-based IFFCO has 35,000 member societies in its fold. The cooperative posted a turnover of Rs 20,787 crore during last fiscal. It produced nearly 8 million tonnes and sold 10.3 million tonnes of fertilisers during 2017-18.

Biopesticide harpin to boost plant immunity, control fungal infections

Researchers at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) have demonstrated the ability to deliver the biopesticide harpin into plants and boost their immunity levels using nanotechnology.
They have developed a delivery system that uses harpin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles that help increase the bioavailability of the biopesticide to both improve immunity and drastically reduce the effects of a fungal infection.

The efficacy of the tool was tested in the tomato plant, where the team led by Appa Rao Podile, Vice-Chancellor, and Sravana Sandhya found a sharp decline in infection up to 80 per cent. The fungal infection in tomato crop is due to Rhizoctonia solani. They have published their work funded by the Department of Biotechnology in the Journal Carbohydrate Polymers. Fungi, bacteria, viruses and insects are the leading pests that challenge agriculture production. Synthetic chemical fungicides and pesticides are used to control plant diseases. Since these chemicals are often not degraded easily in the soil, they exert a damaging effect on environment.

The UoH researchers from the Plant Sciences and Biotechnology departments used the bio-active protein called harpin, taken from a phyto pathogenic bacterium, which is biodegradable. The approach is akin to the immunisation of humans using the killed or attenuated forms of pathogen for subsequent protection against the same pathogen, they said.
Technology transfer

The University has tied up wih Sri Bioaesthetics to produce both the harpin and the harpin-loaded chitosan nanoparticle.
The University has been working on Chitosans, which have a wide range of potential applications, including anti-fungal properties.

The team used chitosans in nanoparticle size to carry the biopesticide harpin in the delivery system. The chitosan nanoparticles’s ability to get into the plant through the pores on the leaves and spread into the cells was tapped to achieve the best results, they said.
