Why I stopped selling and started giving the framework away!

Three months ago, I had a problem.

I had a strong positioning. I had 30 years of experience. I had a methodology that worked.

But I was trying to explain it in conversations and struggling.

Not because the work is complicated. Because explaining a framework in a conversation — without showing it — is like describing a map to someone who cannot see it.

So I stopped trying to sell the framework and started giving it away.

The six questions every retail founder should answer once a year

Answer these honestly and you will know exactly where your business needs work.

1. Brand:
If I asked your three best customers what this brand stands for, would their answers match each other and match what you would say?

2. Product:
Which of your product categories consistently underperforms on margin? When did you last remove a product range that was not earning its space?

3. Operations:
Can your stores open, run, and close to exactly the same standard on a day when you are not there and have no phone signal?

4. Marketing:
What is your customer acquisition cost right now? What is your customer retention rate? If you don't know both numbers, you don't have a marketing system, you have marketing activity.

5. People:
Name three decisions that happen in your stores every day without your involvement. Now name three that should happen without you but do not. The second list is your people development priority.

6. Growth:
Can every store in your current estate pass a structured operational audit against a written standard today? If no, what does that tell you about opening more stores?

One honest afternoon with these questions will tell you more than a year of avoiding them.

I am meeting almost two founders in a day as an average.

What I am learning from the founders in this room:
