What does an 80 mm spine look like in everyday book production?

At Pal Binding Works in Kolkata, one recent book ran to 1,500-1,700 pages. But thickness was only part of the production story.

They were also dealing with binding quality, delivery issues and customers who had stopped placing work.

Since installing the Bindwel Blue Chip, most of those customers have returned.

The Pal Binding Works story looks at seasonal book volumes, thick-book production, a short-turnaround Bhutan Government project and what changed after the installation.

Blowholes, Moisture and Bounce Back

This episode looks at one of the most common reasons for blowholes - moisture, cold environment printing and cover issues that affect how the book behaves in the machine.

The discussion also covered a simple but costly miss.

If the signature is not perforated on the head side, the book can bounce back after nipping and create a hole.

What looks like a small crease issue can become a readability and rejection problem very quickly.
