IITs to conduct seven admission rounds to fill up all seats

Mumbai city news: Last year was the first time when six rounds were conducted instead of the usual two, but 73 of 9,660 seats remained vacant in some of the newer IITs.

To ensure that every seat in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is filled this year, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) of the IITs will conduct seven rounds of admissions.

Last year, six rounds were conducted instead of the usual two, but 73 of 9,660 seats still remained vacant in some of the newer IITs.

This is the third year that JoSAA is conducting admissions to IITs, National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other government-funded technical institutes.

The 23 IITs across the country have 11,000 seats.

Results of the (JEE-Adv) will be announced on Sunday, June 11. The JoSAA said those students who clear JEE-Adv can start registering and applying to institutes from June 15 to 26. The first round of seat allotment will take place on June 28.

“Most students are very aware of their choice and interests so if they don’t get a seat in the desired department or institute, most don’t mind waiting and applying for IITs next year. So it is common for seats to remain vacant after the
admissions are over,” said a senior professor from IIT-Bombay.

He added that most of vacant seats are in the newer IITs.

A statement released by JoSAA in July last year said 73 (0.76%) of the 9,660 seats at IITs had no takers and of the 912 seats up for grabs at Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, 23 (2.52%) were left vacant for the academic year 2016-17 after six rounds of admissions.

JoSAA also introduced the option for students to withdraw their admissions in 2016 and many IIT officials blamed this for the last-minute vacancies. Figures indicated that several students chose to withdraw their admissions before the
final round and this number kept increasing after every round.

“Let’s hope that seven rounds will give students enough time to make an informed choice and choose an appropriate institute and course,” said an official from JoSAA.

350 added to Karnataka’s kitty

1.25 lakh students to vie for about 55,000 seats

On a day when the results were declared, the State government announced that 350 medical seats have been added to Karnataka’s kitty.

This year, medical and dental seat aspirants will obtain seats based on their (NEET) scores.

Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash R. Patil on Tuesday said there were around 8,680 seats (including the 350 new seats) in 56 medical colleges across the State.

Sources in the Medical Education Department said the 350 additional seats were in the seven existing government college.

After the ranks are announced, the Karnataka Examinations Authority would prepare a rank list and allot seats based on them. Meanwhile, nearly 1.25 lakh students who have been allotted ranks will be vying for about 55,000 seats in engineering colleges across the State.

The results of the , for which 1.8 lakh appeared, were announced on Tuesday by Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi and Dr. Patil.

The number of candidates who were eligible to obtain engineering seats in 2016 was 1.27 lakh. Compared with this year, 1,716 candidates more candidates were eligible to obtain last year.

Sources, however, said although the competition was tough this time also, many engineering seats would still remain unfilled as many seats maybe from engineering colleges that are of “poor quality” and as a result would have no takers.

Mr. Rayaraddi said the candidates who have bagged the top five ranks in all streams were eligible for free seats.

He said the top-five candidates from Hyderabad Karnataka region would also be given free seats this year.

Four grace marks awarded

The has awarded four grace marks to students who wrote the Common Entrance Test. While one mark each was awarded in mathematics and physics, two were awarded in chemistry. The number of grace marks, however, have come down when compared with the last year when six marks were awarded.

AYUSH courses through CET

AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) seat aspirants are relieved as all government and government-quota seats will be allotted based on the . There was some confusion as the Central Council of Indian Medicine had sent letters to all chief secretaries that NEET would be the only entrance test for admissions to AYUSH courses as well.

What’s new this year

Document verification for students who obtain seats through the Common Entrance Test is likely to be done online this year. Although the Karnataka Examinations Authority has been attempting to do this for several years now, it had not materialised as many of the Education Department documents were not digitised.

HC OKAYS 3RD COUNSELLING FOR ASPIRANTS

Candidates, who participated in the first two rounds of counselling for the / offline seats, are eligible to participate in the third round. As of now, they will have to pay a penalty for this.

Three students had approached the HC against the (KEA) for not allowing them to participate in the third round of counselling as they had participated in the earlier rounds. The , through an earlier notification, announced that candidates who were allotted seats in the first two rounds were not eligible for participation in the ‘mop-up’ or the third round in 2017.

When the case came up for hearing on Saturday, the KEA submitted that it had issued a new notification on May 25, 2017, allowing “even those candidates who have participated in the first and second round ” to “participate in the third round, subject to clause-6 of the eligibility.” Clause-6 says that if there is any up gradation and vacant seats are left unfilled, then penalty has to be paid.

The advocate for the candidates argued that the payment of the penalty is unreasonable and they were asked to pay the penalty for no fault of theirs. KEA sought time to file objections to this in order to justify Clause-6.

However, the High Court also stated that the penalty payable will be subject to its final order, which is likely to come after the third round of counselling.

The court said that with the new notification, all students are eligible for participation in the third round. “They are permitted to appear in the mop-up/third round subject to the notifications, eligibility, etc.”

The court said that if the candidates are asked to pay the penalty they should pay up. But the payment will be subject to the final orders of the HC in these cases.
The last date for submission of documents for the medical third round is May 28 and for dental it is May 29.

The KEA’s notification says that “all candidates who have been either un-allotted or allotted in round 1 or 2 by holding the allotted seat can participate. Those who have selected seat and cancelled/surrendered can also participate.”

In (A), OBC qualifiers almost equal open category aspirants

MUMBAI: The IITs, once the preserve of the educated elite in the metros, are witnessing a significant class shift.

As 1.7 lakh bright high school graduates take the IIT on Sunday, data reveals that an almost identical number of open category and OBC candidates have qualified to take this final exam to enter the IITs.

Among aspirants from state boards, the ratio is, in fact, skewed in favour of backward candidates as against the ones from the general quota. However, the qualifying score for backward candidates is 49 while for open category students it is 81.

In Maharashtra state board, while 4,394 from the general category have made the cut, 7,460 from the OBC category and 4,619 SC candidates will appear for the JEE (Advanced) test.

Similar is the case with Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh where a larger chunk of OBCs and the SCs have qualified for the IIT test through their school boards.

Even in case of the Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra, Karnataka, Kerala and West Bengal state boards, a larger number of OBC students is competing for IIT seats vis-a-vis those from the open category.
"The make-up of candidates taking the JEE this year has altered," said a JEE chairman.

Historically, CBSE schools have had the largest share of IIT seats, but the trend is changing. In 2012, 57% of candidates admitted were from CBSE, but by 2014, it had dropped to 42%. This year, 64,000 JEE (Adv) candidates are from the noncreamy layer of OBC and 69,000 from the general category.

What that will translate to, said a JEE official, would be that several OBCs would qualify under the general category and not take a quota seat.

"Quite a few general category students of the 2.2 lakh who qualified after the JEE (Main) have dropped out and that may also be responsible in narrowing the (gap between) the number of OBC and general category students," said an IIT director.

As an individual board, dominated the merit list of the JEE (Main) exams for qualifying to the next level. Then came state boards like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra which also occupy a thick slice of the pie.

"Several state board schools and junior colleges are realising the importance of tests like and andopting for an integrated approach where students are trained for entrance tests," said Ruia College principal Suhas Pednekar.
