After 25 years at Texas Instruments, Morris Chang was passed over for the company’s top job.

He was in his 50s.

Most people would have accepted that their biggest opportunity had already passed.

Morris Chang did the opposite.

He moved to Taiwan.

Started again.

And at 56 years old, founded a company called TSMC.

The idea was simple but revolutionary.

Instead of designing its own chips, TSMC would manufacture chips for other companies.

At the time, many people doubted the model.

Today, TSMC is one of the most important companies on Earth.

It produces around 90% of the world’s most advanced chips.

The tiny components powering phones.

Cars.

Data centres.

Medical equipment.

And artificial intelligence.

All because one man refused to believe that being overlooked meant being finished.

Morris Chang did not build his greatest company at 25.

Or 35.

Or even 45.

He built it at 56.

Sometimes rejection is not the end of the story.

Sometimes it is the moment the real story begins.

We are all trapped by our educational backgrounds.

“We’re all trapped by our educational backgrounds. You come out of school knowing a certain field but you don’t know about any other fields of science. That limits what you can do for sure. The way to combat this is to every day learn something new. I tell my grad students that the greatest skill they have is to continue to learn by themselves after they have left graduate school. Most of the things I have used in my life are things that were invented after I left graduate school and I had to keep learning just to keep up with the field.”

Chemistry laureate Louis Brus highlighted the importance of lifelong learning in his Nobel Prize lecture. He also shared his other top tips for success… and they don’t include being a genius!
