"Communication and Brand Storytelling" Inaugural Open Participation Program: October 18 - 19, 2024.

The first inaugural open participation edition of the "Communication and Brand Storytelling" program was successfully conducted by Intellectus Consulting on October 18 & 19, 2024 in Mumbai. 14 participants attended the program.

Day 1 deliberations were devoted to the topic of Communication and its role in building brand differentiation. Concepts of Content Fit and Creative Fit with associated dimensions got discussed with case studies. Other important aspects like building brand conviction, driving belief shifts and ensuring creation of powerful impact on customers through differentiated storytelling got covered.

Day 2 was devoted to the framework of 7 - Principles of Brand Storytelling. Each of the principles got covered in complete detail with cases and the integration of the framework into the brand storyboard. Neuroscience concepts of cognitive load, its subtypes in defining brand choices got covered as well.

The second half of the day saw group work exercises utilising the framework for building the storyboard of actual pharma brands. Group presentations were made by the participants and discussed by all groups.

✊ Poor Data Proficiency Can No longer be Ignored !!!

πŸ‘‰ Last week, I had an in-depth discussion with the Senior Leadership of a mid-sized organisation. The discussions revolved around the need to have its key marketing and sales folks develop an understanding of data, build a perspective on what the data is actually trying to tell you and take actions based on insights emerging from the data points. But what is happening is exactly the opposite, where one ignores the data signals, decision-making is random and gut-feel based, and relied on past experience.

πŸ‘‰ This is the third such discussion in the space of a month. The other two calls were with senior business leaders of India's top 5 pharma companies. One is a Commercial Excellence Director and the other is a SVP Cluster Head of a large specialty care franchise.

πŸ€”πŸ˜ Sounds strange? Figment of Imagination? Impossible to believe?

πŸ˜²πŸ˜• First reactions could be of disbelief, denial, indifference, "it's not the case in our organization", "There's some hidden agenda to push his program..." and so on. None of it actually. It is the bitter truth that stares in the face of our industry. Data Proficiency as a skill is sadly lacking across the board in most organizations. Most people hate to admit it in open but would confess in private.

πŸ‘‰ We have known this all along and have been saying this for the past one and half years. In our cumulative experience of having worked with over 700+ brand marketers (across levels) in coaching interventions, almost 75-80% of them are not even data literate - leave alone being data proficient !

πŸ™ This is no exaggeration but a statement of fact. Our industry is not paying enough attention to the must-have skills like Data Literacy and Data Proficiency which are basic for commercial roles. We seem to be more interested in topics of higher order (Role of Gen AI in pharma) when we are not sorted out on our basics. We have nothing against such discussions but isn't it an irony to talk of a Mars exploration when you do not have the basic space technology to even lift off.

πŸ‘‰ It's our belief that one of the reasons for the sluggish industry growth in these past 2-3 years is the cumulative result of poor decision making on brands and portfolios. Decisions which have been random, impulsive, tactical-driven but not based on data. Let's not put the onus on the external environment alone. A lot has to do with poor decision-making.

πŸ”” It's high time that this changed. And change quickly as we are losing time.
