No matter how “harmless” the questions seem or how much someone “just wants to be educated”, you are not required to be their teacher.

Your they/them pronouns, high heels, or combat boots don’t make you a spokesperson. You have every right to simply exist it without explanation.

November 13–19 is Transgender Awareness Week, which aims to raise visibility and increase advocacy for the rights of transgender people.

“Transgender” is an umbrella term for individuals whose gender identity is different from their s*x assigned at birth. Too often the *false* gender binary is used as a justification for transphobia, with people saying things like “trans women aren’t ‘real’ women”.

Biology is irrelevant to what a person feels in their mind and spirit, even if it challenges everything you’ve been taught. Your difficulty processing someone else’s identity is your problem, not theirs.

This week, explore your understanding of the following issues and concepts in order to be an effective ally to the trans community:

- Pronouns
- Gender neutral language
- Gender neutral bathrooms
- Police brutality against trans people
- The myth of the gender binary
- The intersections of the Black racial identity and trans gender identity

- 22 veterans die by su***de each day.

- The su***de rate for veterans was 1.5x the rate for non-veterans.

- Nearly 173,000 service members who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan were diagnosed with a mental health disorder and less than half have ever received treatment.

There are a number of culturally appropriate mental health treatment options for those who have served in the military. This Veterans Day, be sure to share them with others. You may save a life.

- 1 in 3 women have experienced military s*xual trauma.

- 6,290 service members reported being s*xually assaulted or harassed during active duty in 2020, a number that increased by 54 from 2019.

- 912 civilians and foreign nationals filed complaints that they were s*xually assaulted by service members in 2020.

R**e culture continues to be rampant across the military and it impacts all gender identities. There is also a significant lack of discipline or accountability for actions against civilians in the U.S. and other countries.

There are MST Coordinators within all VA systems that are tasked with providing support and resources.

On Veterans Day, we honor and thank those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their nation.

The hardships, discrimination, and neglect they face in society upon completion of their service is disgraceful and reprehensible. So many non service members glamorize military duty and choose to ignore the lifelong trauma that often comes with combat experiences.

A highly toxic culture of racism and gender based violence across branch’s of the military has also been widely reported for decades with no significant progress made to address it.

- 31.2% of Black servicemembers reported suffering racial discrimination, harassment or both, compared with 23.3% and 21% for Asian and Hispanic troops.

- Veterans enrolled in VA care are less likely to be employed and more likely to have lower income levels than Veterans not receiving VA care.

- Veterans report difficulty in transitioning to civilian positions and difficulty translating military-related skills to higher-paying civilian jobs.

- Approximately 38,000 veterans experience homelessness, with those who served in the late Vietnam and post-Vietnam eras at the greatest risk.

- The Veteran unemployment rate increased from 2.3% to 11.7% in 2020.

Every person who serves should have immediate access to the protection, resources, mental health services, employment, and housing they deserve to live an abundant life following their service.

Microaggressions speak to the character of the person engaging in them, not the victim.

It is too easy to say that you didn’t know something was offensive. There has never been a time where there was so much access to information about what not to do. If you have to question it, you know you probably shouldn’t say or do it.

Microaggressions are typically leveled against groups that are not valued, respected, or honored by other groups. This is demonstrated by the fact that those who use them have privileges that make them feel entitled to information and that the individual has not right to refuse it.

It is not the job of the oppressed to constantly explain their oppression.

Digital blackface describes the act of producing, posting or circulating ‘Black reaction gifs’ online.

It may seem harmless but it is derived from in the historic, racist American minstrel show with performers like T.D. Rice (who originated the device of painting one’s face black with his infamous blackface stage character Jim Crow).

The critical irony of Rice’s actions (as well as those of many who engage in digital blackface) is that he claimed that his performance was designed to stress black humanity. Rice saw himself not as a ridiculer but an advocate.

Displays of any emotion by a Black person are stereotyped as excessive: so happy, so sassy, so ghetto, so loud. In television and film, Black characters are rarely afforded subtle traits or feelings. Scholar Sianne Ngai uses the word “animatedness” to describe our cultural propensity see Black people as walking hyperbole.

Members of the Black community have a culturally-specific way of communicating, like all other cultural identities. Black reactions gifs and memes were created for this purpose. Not to be used by a non-Black person to win an argument or stress their point on social media.

Diwali is a highly significant religious festival in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It is also the most celebrated festival in India. It spans a total of 5 days- from the 13th day of the dark half of the lunar month (Ashvina) to the 2nd day of the light half of the lunar month (Karttika).

Rituals include the lighting of diyas (small lamps filled with oil), bursting firecrackers, and worshipping the Laxmi Ganesha (the goddess of wealth).

The festival signifies light prevailing over darkness. Darkness represents ignorance, and light is a metaphor for knowledge. Therefore, lighting a lamp symbolizes the destruction, through knowledge, of all negative forces- wickedness, violence, lust, anger, envy, greed, bigotry, fear, injustice, oppression, and suffering.

Sometimes when internalize (positive or negative) stereotypes about our identities and feel that if we don’t fit within them when must not be _____ enough.

These are over generalized, misinformed, biased perceptions of groups. You are under no obligation to adhere to or singlehandedly combat them.

Too often South American history, culture, and existence is erased from perceptions of “America”. This can be indicative of an implicit bias.

This is similarly true for U.S. territories like Puerto Rico and Guam.

Many people say “The States” when specifically referencing the U.S.
