Karisalkulam Kanmai — Where the Vaigai Meets the Floodplain 🌿💧
Just about 140 metres from the Vaigai River, Karisalkulam Kanmai is part of a fascinating water system shaped by the river, floodplain and local runoff.
In this field study, we followed the movement of water and explored how the tank receives water through different pathways — during normal river flow, during floods, and through rainfall runoff across the floodplain.
But Karisalkulam is more than a water body.
It helps moderate floods, support groundwater recharge, retain water for agriculture and sustain the surrounding landscape.
Our field study was conducted on 11 August 2026.

Where does the water of Seikaluthur big tank come from?
When a tank is located less than a kilometre from a river, it is natural to assume that the river is its source.
But landscapes can tell a different story.
Seikaluthur big tank is located at a higher elevation than the Vaigai. Its orientation and inlet channel point towards another water system.
So we followed a simple question:
“Where does the water come from?”
Using satellite imagery, elevation clues and the visible drainage pathway, we trace the journey of water towards Seikaluthur big tank .
Is being close to a river enough to determine a tank's water source?
What can elevation and water pathways reveal?

வைகைக்கு அருகில் இருக்கும் செய்களத்தூர் பெரிய கண்மாய்க்கு நீர் எங்கிருந்து வருகிறது?
ஒரு கண்மாய் ஆற்றுக்கு அருகில் இருப்பதால், அந்த ஆற்றிலிருந்துதான் தண்ணீர் வரும் என்று நாம் நினைத்துவிடுகிறோம்.
ஆனால் நில அமைப்பு சில நேரங்களில் வேறு கதையைச் சொல்கிறது.
செய்களத்தூர் பெரிய கண்மாய் வைகை ஆற்றைவிட உயரமான இடத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது. மேலும், அதன் அமைப்பும் நீர்வரத்து கால்வாயும் வேறொரு நீராதாரத்தைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டுகின்றன.
அதனால், இந்த வீடியோவில் நாம் ஒரு கேள்வியைப் பின்தொடர்கிறோம்:

In our previous episode, we initially interpreted a landscape as scrubland based on satellite imagery.
After checking the land records, we found that it was actually a privately owned agricultural (patta) land with a survey number.
In this episode, we explore verified scrublands within the Vaigai Basin and understand how they respond to rainfall and why they are important for the landscape.
Our goal is to understand the Vaigai Basin by combining satellite imagery, land records, and field verification.
