Should show their vulnerabilities?
In 2014, as part of , the multi-year research by to find out what makes a perfect team, Matt Sakaguchi, a mid-level manager took the help of the lead researcher to asses the team he managed.
The researchers gave him a survey to gauge the group’s norms. With reluctance the team took the survey. When the results came out, contrary to his belief they were a strong unit, it was a weak one.
To sort this out, he proposed an offsite to discuss the survey’s results. He began by asking everyone to share something personal about themselves and he went first.
‘‘I think one of the things most people don’t know
about me,’’ he told the group, ‘‘is that I have Stage 4 cancer.’’
They were shocked, in all these 10 months no one suspected that he was dealing with anything like this.
The team dynamics instantly changed. Now, they were
open to share their weak moments. When they focused on the survey results, they spoke honestly about the issues that were bothering them at work.
Project Aristotle revealed that employees seek to build bonds which in turn helps the team to perform better.
