Pilots have 2 radios: VHF and HF.

VHF dies over ocean. HF works 3000km away... but ONLY at night? 🤔

Here’s why 👇

It’s all about the **D LAYER** in our sky.

**DAY**: Sun charges the D Layer. It acts like a sponge and absorbs HF radio waves. Dead zone.

**NIGHT**: No sun. D Layer vanishes. HF waves shoot up, bounce off higher layers, and come down 3000km away.

That’s why transatlantic flights use HF at night and rely on satellites + VHF near land during day.

**3 Waves:**
1. Surface - Short, hugs ground
2. Sky - Long, bounces off sky
3. Space - Straight, for ATC
