With the effects of the pandemic playing out in full force in India, it was a year of growth and reflection for us at Kabadiwalla Connect. However, work must go on and we are excited to share some of our major milestones and features in 2021!

Kabadiwalla Connect is excited to announce that it has been awarded a contract by GIZ India to conduct a baseline study on plastic management around the Cooum and Adyar river in Chennai.

This project, which is part of an on-going bilateral cooperation between German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the Indian Ministry for Environment (MoEFCC), will ultimately aim to demonstrate technological solutions in riverine and marine ecosystems to close material cycles of marine litter.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has just featured our work and inclusion into the Shell GameChanger program! 😃

Founded in 1865 to facilitate international connectivity in communications networks, the ITU allocates global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develops technical standards that ensure networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect, and strives to improve access to ICTs to underserved communities worldwide.

ITU is a specialised agency of the United Nations and is among one of the oldest international organisations still in operation.

Since its inception in 1996, the Shell GameChanger program has supported over 200 promising ideas helping them become a commercial reality.

Today, we are so excited to announce our company's inclusion into their prestigious program — and we look forward to working closely with the Shell team — so we may significantly improve the quality of life of front-line waste-management workers in the Global South!

It's an absolute honour to be mentioned in this year's Circularity Gap report — published by Circle Economy!

Excerpt from the publication about KC's work:
"Technology-based solutions come into play in unifying the informal sector, as seen in the case of Kabadiwalla Connect. The Indian company provides cost-effective and low-carbon solutions for waste collection, segregation and processing through spatial mapping, digitalisation, sourcing and reverse logistics solutions that integrate informal workers into the system."

How may we enable material traceability in urban India's informal post-consumer plastics recycling supply-chain?

We are excited to showcase a Point-of-Sale (PoS) device and QR code-based traceability implementation strategy for post-consumer plastics bought and sold in small scrap-shops that operate in local neighbourhoods in urban India.

In Chennai alone, these small scrap shops are responsible for the collection of over 130,000 tons of recyclable material every year.

Let us know what you think!

In 2017, Kabadiwalla Connect mapped and surveyed 2500 informal waste sector stakeholders to create a comprehensive dataset on Chennai's informal waste ecosystem.

The resulting report, which can be downloaded from the 's Data Innovation Fund Project website, contains the survey design and deployment methodology; stakeholder demographics; business characteristics; material analysis at super-category (paper, plastic, glass, metal) and subcategory levels; and key insights gained from the research.
