The 12th IALD India Light Workshop, facilitated by , unfolded at Indubhai Parekh School of Architecture (IPSA), Rajkot - creating an immersive learning environment where students explored light beyond theory and into experience.  IPSA stands at the forefront of architectural education in Saurashtra—shaping design thinking and empowering future architects through an inspiring learning environment. IALD India Light Workshops create a collaborative platform where students and professionals explore the art and science of lighting—blending hands-on learning, creative freedom, and real-world design thinking across cities in India. Lighting Installation Workshop 2025: A Journey Through Light and Art
The recent three-day Lighting Installation Workshop at Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (Alba) Beirut was an immersive experience designed to deepen students’ understanding of light as a powerful artistic medium. Led by Cherine Saroufim and Amardeep Dugar , and supported by a team of seasoned lighting designers and educators - Hind El Chaar, Joseph Houbeika Nadine Baalbaki Sandra Macaron , and Stephanie Hreiki - the workshop provided a unique blend of theory and hands-on practice.
Day 1: Discovering the Nature of Light
The workshop kicked off with a focus on the fundamental properties of light. Students engaged in hands-on activities, experimenting with both legacy and contemporary light sources.
Day 2: Merging Art and Emotion
On the second day, the workshop took a more artistic turn, intertwining light with music and emotion. Students were encouraged to express their feelings in response to different musical tracks through an extensive doodling session. This creative exercise not only fostered individual expression but also served as a springboard for their artistic light installations.
Day 3: Bringing Installations to Life
The final day was dedicated to the actual creation of the lighting installations. Armed with insights and inspiration from the previous days, student groups transformed their ideas into tangible art pieces. Nine distinct sites within the ALBA campus were chosen for the installations, allowing each group to showcase their creativity and understanding of light in a real-world context.
Conclusion
The Lighting Installation Workshop at ALBA Beirut was a resounding success, blending education, creativity, and collaboration. Students not only learned about the technical aspects of light but also how to harness it as a medium for artistic expression. This workshop exemplified the power of interdisciplinary learning, leaving participants inspired and equipped to explore the world of light in their future artistic endeavours. Workshop Recap: The Impact of Controls on Lighting Design
Dr. Amardeep M. Dugar curated and moderated an insightful workshop-style panel discussion titled “The Impact of Controls on Lighting Design” at the SmartHome Expo 2025 LightingConnect Event. This engaging session partnered by the IALD, IES & LiDAI highlighted the critical role of control systems in lighting design, emphasizing the need for early integration in project planning.

In an ideal scenario, control concepts should be embedded from the project’s inception. However, the reality often sees these controls introduced midway or even at the project’s conclusion, leading to unique challenges. The workshop aimed to address these hurdles and provide actionable solutions. The workshop featured four mini-sessions led by esteemed lighting designers: Harmeet Singh Issaar, Ifthikar Illyas, Kirtee Singh & Kunal Shah. Each session focused on the importance of understanding project requirements and developing a comprehensive control strategy that aligns with the overall design intent. The speakers provided guidance on selecting the appropriate protocol for specific projects, ensuring that attendees could make informed decisions based on their unique needs. The discussions delved into various control protocols, including: DALI, BACnet and LON. A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to exploring the integration of IoT and smart lighting controls. The speakers highlighted how these technologies can enhance user experience, improve energy efficiency, and reduce maintenance costs. Through real-world examples and case studies, the experienced panelists shared practical strategies for overcoming common challenges, such as: Integrating controls with existing systems, Managing data and cybersecurity concerns, Ensuring user-friendly and intuitive control interfaces.

A Dream Realized: My Visit to the ASHRAE Headquarters
As a student of architecture, I have always been captivated by the principles and standards set forth by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Each project I undertook was a testament to my commitment to these standards, which emphasize energy efficiency and sustainability. So, when the opportunity arose to visit the ASHRAE Headquarters in Atlanta, it felt like a childhood dream come true.
Walking through the doors of this remarkable facility, I was immediately struck by its design—a true embodiment of a Net-Zero building. The existing structure had been meticulously remodeled to achieve optimum window-to-wall ratios, allowing for maximum daylight gains. The strategically redesigned skylights flooded the interior with natural light, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. In-situ solar photovoltaic (PV) cells harnessing the sun’s energy to power the building sustainably.
However, amidst all the innovative features, one aspect caught my attention: the absence of daylight and occupancy sensors for lighting control. In a building that exemplifies cutting-edge design and energy efficiency, I found it intriguing that such technology was not utilized. Implementing these sensors could enhance the building’s performance, ensuring that lighting is only used when necessary and further reducing energy consumption.
This observation sparked a thought—perhaps ASHRAE could consider integrating these technologies in future remodels, taking the building from Net-Zero to Net-Positive. By generating more energy than it consumes, the headquarters could set a new benchmark for sustainability in architectural design.

Ghuzhen is a vibrant hub where cutting-edge lighting technologies and high-quality luminaires are developed and showcased. This small town in Guangdong Province is home to numerous manufacturers and suppliers, making it a pivotal center for lighting solutions globally. The sheer scale and diversity of lighting products available is awe inspiring. From energy-efficient LED solutions to intricate decorative fixtures, Ghuzhen offers a wide array of options that cater to various needs and preferences. The local manufacturers are not only focused on mass production but are also committed to research and development, ensuring that they stay at the forefront of lighting technology.The town’s commitment to innovation is further exemplified by its state-of-the-art testing facilities, which ensure that products meet the highest standards of quality and performance. Additionally, Ghuzhen’s manufacturers are actively involved in shaping industry standards and regulations, demonstrating their dedication to advancing the lighting sector as a whole.
