A meaningful day of alignment, collaboration and strategic direction comes to a close in Mumbai.

The FSAI Board Meeting was a comprehensive review of the journey so far — with chapters presenting their key initiatives and achievements from April to date, Functional Chairs sharing the work underway across their respective areas, and the leadership team deliberating on the thrust areas and priorities for the months ahead.

It was a day of reflection, recognition and, more importantly, alignment on how we can collectively create greater impact for the industry.

With the Board Meeting concluded, Chapter Presidents, RDs and National Chairs are now looking forward to an exciting day tomorrow — the FSIE inaugural, the Expo, and the FIST Awards.

The conversations have begun. The teams are ready.

When does “we’ll fix it later” become a safety risk?

Deferred maintenance isn't always avoidable.

Budgets change. Vendors get delayed. Shutdown windows move. Operational priorities compete.

The problem begins when a temporary deferral quietly becomes permanent.

A fire-safety maintenance item shouldn't remain open indefinitely with nothing more than a “pending” status.

Before deferring a safety-critical item, ask:

🛡️ What is the compensating measure?
How will the risk be managed until the permanent fix is completed?

📅 When will it be reviewed?
Every deferral needs a firm review date.

👤 Who has accepted the risk?
Critical deferrals need clear ownership and appropriate escalation.

📋 Where is it being tracked?
Maintain visibility of deferred maintenance across the facility or portfolio.

The danger isn't always the decision to defer.

It's forgetting that the decision was supposed to be temporary.

🚨 “It's probably another false alarm.”

That's one sentence nobody should become comfortable saying when a fire alarm activates.

Repeated nuisance alarms can gradually condition occupants to hesitate instead of responding immediately.

And sometimes, the problem begins with something as basic as detector selection and placement.

Complex spaces need more than standard assumptions.

🏢 High ceilings affect how smoke reaches detectors.

💨 Airflow can influence smoke movement.

🍳 Cooking aerosols and steam can create nuisance activations.

🏭 Dust and process particulates can interfere with inappropriate detector technologies.

A reliable detection strategy should therefore:

✅ Match detector technology to the actual environment
✅ Consider ceiling height and airflow when determining placement
✅ Identify and control recurring nuisance-alarm sources

The goal isn't fewer alarms at any cost.

It's fewer false alarms without compromising early detection of a real fire.

👉 Treat every recurring false alarm as something to investigate, not something to get used to.

A contractor may know the job. But do they know your facility?

Every facility has its own risks, procedures, restricted areas and emergency arrangements.

Yet vendor onboarding can sometimes become little more than a generic induction form and a signature.

Effective onboarding should ensure contractors understand:

📍 Site-specific hazards in the areas where they will work

🔥 Permit-to-work requirements, especially for hot work and other controlled activities

📞 Who to contact immediately when an unexpected hazard is identified

A contractor may only spend a few hours inside your building.

That makes the first briefing more important, not less.

Don't just onboard the contractor. Onboard them to the risk.

👉 Before work starts, verify understanding, not merely documentation.

One workplace can speak many languages. Safety must speak to everyone.

A safety sign written in only one language may meet a documentation requirement, but that doesn't guarantee every worker understands what to do.

This becomes especially important in diverse industrial and facility environments.

Effective communication should include:

🛑 Recognisable pictograms
Use clear safety symbols as the first layer of communication.

🗣️ Languages workers actually understand
Deliver inductions and toolbox talks in the languages spoken on site.

🚪 Demonstration, not assumption
During drills, verify that workers can actually identify their nearest exit and follow the correct response.

The objective isn't simply to provide information.

The objective is comprehension.

Because during an emergency, instructions need to be understood immediately.

👉 Review your safety signage from the perspective of the worker least comfortable with your organisation's primary language.
