Power of Pause

Today is Monday, the 6th June. All of us are back to work after a week end. What did this weekend mean to me? During the beginning of my career, I shudder to think of holidays and weekends for they restricted my work momentum. But that was in my youth. Only now do I realise how important it is for everyone to pause for a moment not only during weekends but also in their lives, in their speeches, conversations etc. When you pause during a speech or a lecture, you provide a moment to your audience to digest what had been said earlier and to look for something new in the ensuing moments. When you pause during an argument, may be, some unsavory comment from your tongue could be avoided. Pause in life could be even taking a sabbatical and adding value to your profile in terms of new learning.

What happens in the weekend when you press the pause button? First all, Friday evening itself, the yearning for pause begins. Your metabolic system demands that you need to slow down. Slowing down does not mean just lying down or sleeping (although it could be, nothing wrong), it can mean whole lot of things other than your routine work. How do I press the pause? For me, weekend is for oil bath, the one that I look forward to, no yoga on weekends but meditate (Heartfulness), read, prepare material for LinkedIn and You tube posts, spending more quality time with my family, indulge in weekend purchase- in short doing anything other than what I do during working days.

Pause permits to me commit to deep work, some times 1.5 to 2.5 hours at a stretch. Enormous amount work would have been completed by then. When you are in pause, you are in gift of stillness and that is gracious. This you will never know how to express but can only be experienced.

Power of pause is important for it reverses metabolism, clear thinking is possible and new ideas emerge, it prepares for the week ahead and it is like you enter the boxing ring after a deep relaxation and training. This morning while meditating, a new idea emerged to make use of new project coming in my way.

Just as it is important for you to indulge in the pause, you should also respect others’ pause. Don’t call up your colleagues during the weekends. The relaxed minds contribute more than what they can do without such a pause.

Plan an outline for the week ahead at the end of pause, preferably on Sunday evening or night. You will never miss out to execute them. I plan only the outline, not more than that.

Any posting to this district was considered as punishment posting. Now I really do not know how the district acquired such a synonym. It is the southern tip of India from where in about 22 nautical miles, you reach Sri Lankan waters. That is why, you hear instances of Indian fishermen caught by the Sri Lankan Navy. However, the place is better known for its majestic grandeur temple, the place where Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva before and after his victory over Ravana. This is the place where North meets South and vice versa culturally and spiritually. Every year 7.5 lakh pilgrims visit the temple from all over the world.

The district also has interesting connection to Swami Vivekananda, not many may know. His US trip was made possible by the generous contribution of the then Raja Bhaskara Sethupathy of Ramnad, the sagely King. Actually, the invitation to attend the World Conference on Religion was extended to the King first. But he decided that it would be better if a sage could represent the Hindu religion. That was how, Swami Vivekananda attended the conference. To honor his contribution, Swami Vivekananda set his foot first in this town on his return from US. Another feather in its cap is this is the birth place of People’s President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. There is a memorial in his honor and it is well maintained.

The vast coast line offers immense scope for marine activities including Chank fishing, pearl fishing and sea food. Maximum fish catch is observed in this district in the whole of Tamilnadu. Both Government of India and Tamilnadu have identified Marine food in their ODOP schemes. The real specialty item from this district is a fresh water fish ‘ayirai’ which is rare and priced at Rs.3000 kg. Research by Fisheries University might usher new techniques in ‘ayirai’ fish farming.

The district has substantial NRI population. Their capital, expertise and contacts should be tapped for projects in Tourism, Pearl fishing, Chank fishing, processed sea food and handicrafts made of chank. Similarly, the cultivation of rice, millets, pulses and cotton is practiced. Value added formats of these items lead higher realisations for farmers.

The district is one of the two in Tamilnadu to be designated as Aspirational Districts. It is Government of India’s program to usher in development to enable optimum utilization of their potential, this program focuses closely on improving people’s ability to participate fully in the vibrant economy. Health & Nutrition, Education, Agriculture & Water Resources, Financial Inclusion & Skill Development. The program was launched in 2018 and there is substantial progress on the ground. The Oil & Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) has 86 gas wells in the district. ONGC spent substantial amount of money towards aspirational district program of this district.

Finding an international buyer!

The very purpose of business is to serve a customer and make money out of such service or product. While it is relatively easier to find a buyer in domestic market, it is difficult to find an international buyer because of logistic reasons. But it is important to know that while you, as a seller, try to locate a buyer, the very same buyer is also in search of one seller like you. So, the search is mutual. In marketing, we have two types of strategies to be adopted, push type and pull type. Under Push type strategy, you initiate efforts to locate buyers and establish contact with them. Simply put, you are in search of buyers. That is push strategy for you!

How do we go about this! You must be where your suppliers or competitors are. Join Export promotions council (EPC) for your business. There are 26 EPCs and 6 commodity boards. If your product does not fall in any of these, then you can join Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO). These organisations arrange buyer seller meets, reverse buyer seller meets, participation in international exhibitions etc. Sometimes, participation in international exhibition may come at subsidized cost for you.

You can join bilateral chamber of commerce. For example, if your products are in demand in Japan, you can Indo Japan Chamber of Commerce. Regular Chambers of Commerce also help in buyer seller meets.

You can be in touch with Indian missions abroad. If your product has demand in UK, you establish contact with economic attaché of Indian mission over there. Similarly, you can also approach foreign missions in India.

Get data base of importers abroad of your product. You can send mass mails to your importers. While mass mailing, ensure that you have mass mailing solutions. Adhere to the code of conduct of mailing.

Export of Vegetables or Cut Vegetables

India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world but contribute just 1% in terms of global vegetable trade. Blame lies squarely on us for still we are yet to know the market pulse; instead, we seek short cut. We are complacent, satiated very easily with few bucks thrown at us. Besides, we are yet to have a sense of quality to meet the international standards. Let me elaborate on the first part namely the market pulse.

Recently, I had an interaction with a young exporter from Coimbatore. The surrounding areas of Coimbatore are known for cultivation of vegetables. He stopped exporting vegetables to Dubai. It was shocking to learn from him that vegetables sent to Dubai are auctioned in the market. Whatever the price is, the broker(importer) would deduct his commission of 5% and remit the balance. That means the price is uncertain. This means supply over strips demand. We have to learn from others. We need to package it right and brand it. Australia that does not grow cashew imports from India and Africa adds value, packages and sell under a brand. This is smart way of doing business. Similarly, China sells peeled onions that commands at least 100 $ more than raw onions. Similar is the case with peeled potatoes.

Now, we do we do with our vegetables? Our vegetables should not go to auction market. They should go directly to malls that sell in packaged condition. We can also cut them and send. This way you reduce the pain point of home makers. This strategy may take some time but in due course, we will develop market for this segment.

It should not be sustenance agriculture but agri business! It is important to note that we are the largest producer of Okra and Ginger in the world besides second position in many others. Important markets are Europe, Middle East, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives.

Diwali

Diwali is the grand festival of lights. Several reasons are attributed to this festival, by different communities and regions of India . But the common denominator is Diwali. One thing is the arrival of rains, a cause for cheer. This year, we have seen copious rains in the past few days.
Diwali follows Mahalaya amavasa when we pay our respects to the departed souls of our family. By way of celebration, we light the sky during Diwali, we show our respected departed souls to reach back from where they came.
We are celebrating Diwali with all joy and cheer. May there be peace, love and understanding in the entire Universe. Through this post, I thank from the deepest core of my heart for all Diwali greetings pouring from all over the world from you all

My District My Pride, Kanyakumari district

Kanyakumari district is the richest in terms of human development index for Tamilnadu. Quite unsurprising! The district is a gift of nature with beautiful sand beaches, agriculture, fishing, presence of Vivekananda rock, Tiruvalluvar statue, Kanyakumari temple and the church. Even more pleasant surprise is that with so much tourist footfall, the pollution levels are less.

Cashew has been identified as the product to be focused for the district in terms of One District One product (ODOP) scheme of the Government of Tamilnadu. However, there are other agricultural products like rubber, Coconut and Banana. Coconut cultivation has led to desiccated coconut production and activated carbon. There are clusters for nylon filament and cashew processing.

The no of foreign tourists’ arrivals was pegged at 75 lakh last year. This is a sizeable figure. Combination of yoga, Ayurveda and meditation as a package for rejuvenation aimed at both foreign and domestic would bring more revenue. Herbal extract could be value addition to this segment as well. Value addition in banana can bring additional export opportunities. The nearest international airport is Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala is just 67 kms from here.

But concerted efforts in pull marketing is needed. At the moment, the pull is because of referrals. This has to change. The district is sitting on a gold mine. It has to be capitalized. Social media campaign aimed at the positioning the district as a premier location is required. The district is on the radar of Government of Tamilnadu for an airport shortly and as transshipment hub in the plan of Government of India by 2030.

Trademarks and Intellectual Property rights

Business valuation and Business Earnings are two different things. Of course, business earning does influence and a factor in business valuation. In valuing a busines, the emotional connect of the brand with its customers is factored. Customers keep coming back to the business because of its emotional connect. It means repeat business. Repeat business enables association with the brand.

It is a trend these days, that entrepreneurs have a definite exit strategy. They have 5 to 10 years’ time scale to exit business. Those with or without exit strategy need to invest their time, energy and little money in creating a trade mark and rearing it as a child. Yes, as a child!

What is Trade mark? Trade mark means a mark capable of being represented graphically and which is capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one person from those of others and may include shape of goods, their packaging and combination of colours.

So, the business that you pursue does not only earn income but also enhances a value by itself. Many would know the famous Thallapakatti biriyani. There was usage of the same trade mark by another biriyani busines entity by name Thalappkattu Rawther. Chennai-based restaurant Thalappakattu Biriyani & Fast Food claimed that its promoters’ ancestor Sulaiman was the Chief of the Horse Regiment in the palace of Raja of Sivaganga. As he wore a turban, his family came to be known as ‘Thalappakattu Rawthers. But High court held the issue in favor of Dindigul based Thalappakatti and restrained the usage of name by Thalappakattu biriyani.

Therefore, entrepreneurs must not only register their trade mark but also fiercely protect in case of infringement. It is a 3-step registration as below:

• 01.Apply in writing
• 02.to be filed in the jurisdiction of the Trade Mark Registrar
• 03.Application to be advertised either before acceptance or after and accept if there is no opposition

In international trade, supply chain disruptions need not only be caused by logistics but also by stake holders on simple procedural matters. When an importer goes in for certain exemption provisions on the promise of certain act by him, the customs require him to execute BG for both value and time. The importer’s Bank steps in to provide BG. Here arises the conundrum.

A fixed format with certain clauses like autorenewal is a must for customs. Any other clause that takes away the freedom of the customs is a taboo and is frowned. Auto renewal means while the BG may be for 3 years but the exemption scheme would be in for 8 years, then the customs expect the BG to kept alive for such extended period suo motto. Some banks, or sometimes, same bank but different branches have their own logic in agreeing to this clause.

Next agitated clause is the one that restricts the liability of the bank to pay not more than what is guaranteed. I am a legal person and I fail to understand the need for such a clause. If a BG is for a fixed sum, even if the bank wants to pay more than that, it is not possible. Why on earth this clause is insisted, I fail to comprehend. Third point of contention is invocation only by the beneficiary (in this case by the customs) and not by any one else. Fourth is return of original BG to the bank either for invocation or for cancellation.

All these mean the importer is shuttled between two courts for days resulting in demurrage and loss of production. Who is to bell the cat? Both are important stakeholders, the reigns of which are with the Government.
