Order or Chaos? 🌿

At first glance, a wild forest may seem chaotic, and a manicured lawn may appear ordered. But in the language of nature, the opposite is often true.

True order isn’t about straight lines, symmetry, or visual neatness, it’s about elements working together in harmony, supporting one another in a system that is self-sustaining and resilient.
A forest is a perfect example, diverse, layered, abundant, thriving without interference.

Chaos, on the other hand, often hides behind our human obsession with tidiness. The constant mowing, watering, pruning, and inputs needed to maintain a lawn or a decorative garden consumes massive energy, yet gives very little back. It’s a closed loop of maintenance without meaning.

In permaculture, we learn to observe these patterns. We design not for appearance, but for function, relationship, and long-term balance.

Because true order is when life flourishes with minimal effort and gives more than it takes.

This reflection is inspired from the Permaculture Design Manual.

10,000 mangoes from one tree.
Yes, you read that right. A single, well-loved native mango tree gave us over 10,000 fruits this season, no chemicals, no irrigation. Just time, care, and connection.

You don’t need an orchard to create abundance.
Just diversity, patience, and a relationship with the land.

Our old systems knew this.
They were resilient, built to survive both floods and droughts. They didn’t chase yield, they nurtured ecosystems.

Every seed from this tree is a symbol of continuity, a culture passed down through roots, soil, and forest.

This is what permaculture truly means.
🍃 A forest of native fruit trees, each giving in its own season, feeding life beyond our own.
🌳 Diversity isn’t just beautiful, it’s essential for resilience and future food security.

Let’s reimagine abundance. Not as more, but as enough for everyone, for a long, long time.

Want to grow your own food in a small space? 🌿 Try a Mandala Garden – Find link in the bio

The mandala garden is also known as the Ganga Ma Garden is named in honor of a South Indian woman who established a mandala garden in her backyard to fulfill her family’s nutritional needs.

The circular layout of a mandala garden allows for better accessibility, enabling us to reach all plants without stepping on the soil, thus preventing soil compaction. Additionally, the design maximizes growing space and can create microclimates that support a diverse range of plants.

Residents of Tribe Farm 🪶

Welcome to Tribe Family, where the presence of these winged allies brings joy to our agricultural haven. These are some of the insectivorous birds that l supporting our farm life.

How do they help in the lives of farmers?

1. Natural Pest Control: Insectivorous birds actively manage pest populations in agricultural fields, feasting on a variety of insects, including those harmful to crops.

2. Increased Crop Yield & Cost Savings : By keeping insect populations in check, these avian allies contribute to higher crop yields. Farmers reap the benefits of reduced crop damage and increased productivity, translating into improved economic outcomes.

3. Biodiversity Maintenance: Insectivore birds prevents the unchecked proliferation of specific insect species that could disrupt the natural harmony and become stewards of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes, fostering a balanced ecosystem.

The conversion of natural forests into agricultural lands poses a threat to biodiversity, impacting both wildlife and global food security. Intensive farming practices and chemical use exacerbate this situation, particularly affecting forest-associated species. Pollution and habitat changes present challenges to many organisms, with only the most adaptable species surviving, dispersing across habitats for resources. While this dispersal brings drawbacks such as pest outbreaks and crop damage, it also fosters ecological connections and services like pest control and pollination.

Conserving landscape connectivity through integrated pest management emerges as a pathway to long-term benefits for both agriculture and biodiversity.

Why do we have 'Wild zone' in a Permaculture design?

Reforestation is the cornerstone of a thriving ecosystem, fostering soil health, preserving water resources, and combating climate change. By allowing certain areas in our land to remain untamed and undisturbed, we create havens for native plants, beneficial insects, and wildlife. These are wild zones and act as biodiversity reservoirs, supporting pollinators, natural predators, and diverse flora that contribute to overall ecosystem health. In the intricate design of Permaculture, embracing wild zones is a deliberate choice to cultivate harmony between cultivated spaces and the untamed beauty of nature, promoting ecological balance and long-term sustainability.

When we first met with his dream to set a farmstay on this hilltop, one of his biggest concern was how to manage these steep slopes?? How to stop erosion, rebuild soil and make them productive?

Today, witnessing the transformation of this land brings us immense joy. Here are a few strategies we employed to tackle the steep slopes:

1. Stone pitching with Grasses: Stone pitching with interspersed grasses provided an immediate stability to the steep slope. Eventually, in the process of succession, they will be taken over by naturally regenerating plants.

2. Native Species Reforestation and Grasses: Planting indigenous species and incorporating grasses proved highly effective in stabilizing the slopes.

3. Boomerang Mulch Rings: Strategically placing mulch rings around trees played a crucial role in regulating water flow and supporting overall soil health.

4. Swales & Terraces: Implementing swales and terraces served as a methodical approach to control erosion, conserving both water and soil in the process.

The implementation of these techniques has not only resolved the initial concerns but has also paved the way for the slopes to be naturally embraced over time.

What is beauty to you?

Aesthetic experience has a strong influence in people's quality of life, health or vitality, providing inspiration, harmony and peace. And it plays an important role in landscape designing.

When the concept of ecological value is linked with aesthetic value in a landscape it could bring in more beauty to the land - known as 'Functional beauty'. It serves the purpose of Earth care and People care with a fair share.

Knowledge and experience shapes our aesthetic judgements of landscapes, in the same way that education influences the appreciation of art. It also rebuilds the human-nature connection.

Here, we learn diversity brings resilience to the system and provides diverse yield. And as good productivity is essential, so is beauty: it is food for the soul.
