Indian telecommunications firm Bharti Airtel, on Monday, announced a strategic partnership with IT services firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for implementing 5G broadband network solutions in India.

Tata Group has developed a ‘state-of-the-art’ O-RAN (Open Radio Access Network) based Radio and NSA/SA Core and has integrated a totally indigenous telecom stack, leveraging the Group capabilities and that of its partners. This will be available for commercial development starting January 2022.

As per the partnership, Airtel will pilot this indigenous solution during its 5G rollout. The pilot will begin in January 2022 as per Government of India guidelines.

“With its world-class technology ecosystem and talent pool, India is well-positioned to build groundbreaking solutions and applications for the world. This will also provide a massive boost to India becoming an innovation and manufacturing destination,” said Gopal Vittal, MD and CEO (India and South Asia) at Bharti Airtel.

The 5G solutions, once commercially proven in Airtel’s diverse and brownfield network will open export opportunities for India, which is now the second-largest telecom market in the world after China.
Airtel is a Board member of the O-RAN Alliance and is committed to explore and implement O-RAN based networks in India. Earlier this year, Airtel became the first telecom company in India to demonstrate 5G over its LIVE network in Hyderabad. The Company has started 5G trials in major cities using spectrum allocated by the Department of Telecom.

Other Indian telecom players such as Reliance Jio have also commenced 5G trials, even as experts believe that the prolonged second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic will delay the countrywide rollout of the technology.

EESL is a joint venture of NTPC, Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation and Power Grid Corporation of India. It was set up under the Union ministry of power to facilitate the implementation of energy-efficiency projects.

KEEPING IN MIND the diverse requirements in rural areas, Energy Efficiency Services (EESL), a state-run power sector player, is in talks with state-run power distribution companies (discoms) to implement its new modular programme, which would set up solar plants in villages, install LED street lights with batteries and replace older agricultural pump sets with efficient systems. The company has already installed 100 megawatt (MW) of solar capacity in Maharashtra and is supplying power at Rs 3/unit directly to the local agricultural feeders.

With incremental tariffs, the company is willing to provide the additional services without any subsidy from the central or state governments, Saurabh Kumar, managing director, EESL, told FE. EESL is a joint venture of NTPC, Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation and Power Grid Corporation of India. It was set up under the Union ministry of power to facilitate the implementation of energy-efficiency projects.
EESL is currently enacting the ‘convergence’ strategy to optimise the usage of lithium-ion battery systems and overcome the challenge of prohibitive costs. “Weareemulatingthismodelwithdecentralised- solar as well, where we want to have multiple revenue streams from single asset through clean energy,” Kumar said.

The company is already supplying power at Rs 3/unit to agricultural feeders in Maharashtra from solar plants built on unused land in the vicinity. ForRs 3.87/unit, it would also install LED street lights with recharge able batteries and for Rs 4.30/unit, EESL will set up energy-efficient pump sets.

“We have started conversations with Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh about the program and the initial response is good,” Kumar added. ByFY21-end, the company plans to have 600 MW of such projects in Maharashtra, while in Uttar Pradesh, the target is for 300 MW solar and about 75,000 pumps.

“Uttar Pradesh prefers to have more pumps than streetlights,” Kumar pointed, adding that“the tariffs will be modulated according to the add-on services the states choose as per their needs”. The programme is similar to the union government’s Kusum scheme, which also seeks to solarise agricultural pumps, but does not require any capital support from the government.“Given the current scenario, the government’s Kusum scheme may have to wait for a while as the solar pumps warrant significant subsidy grant and I personally don’t see grants coming at least in another one year,”Kumar said.

Praneeth Pillarisetti and Harsha Vardhan Reddy are at the forefront of a solar panel that can generate electricity and heat water.

If you are constructing a house and want to make it energy efficient, one of the things you are likely to do is install solar panels to generate electricity. In addition, you might look at installing a solar water heater. To generate two kilowatts of power and approximately 200 litres of hot water, you will require two sets of solar panels occupying approximately 300 square feet on your terrace.

However, consider the possibility of a two-in-one or duplex solar panel that generates electricity and heats water, occupying only 170 square feet on the terrace, which can leave you with more space for, say, a roof garden.

Praneeth Pillarisetti and Harsha Vardhan Reddy, co-founders of Birds Eye Energy, are making this possible with their innovative duplex solar panels. After developing the product in 2017 and testing it in 2018, they launched it in April 2019. A hotel in Lakdikapul, Nampally railway station, and two villas in Gachibowli are among their first clients.

Their small office in Banjara Hills belies their big dreams. Praneeth and Harsha are eager to develop unique products in the renewable energy sector, in the next five to seven years. They intend to develop products suitable for both Indian and international markets.

Praneeth did his BTech in Aerospace Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, and Masters in Renewable Energy Systems from the University of Florida. He worked in areas concerning green energy technology for a decade, before he turned entrepreneur.

Harsha was his batchmate at IIT Madras, studying Bio-technical Engineering before pursuing MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. He worked in the operations, finance and project management sections for 11 years, and then teamed up with Praneeth.

In 2016, Praneeth and Harsha founded Birds Eye Energy along with two other friends. All four were the seed investors. “In the beginning, I was a passive investor and worked like a consultant. In 2018 when the product was developed and we were testing it simultaneously in Chennai and Hyderabad, I quit my job and focused on strengthening this dream,” says Harsha.

In 2017, the co-founders spotted a small proof of concept clay model of the duplex solar panel at IIT Madras. “It was a 10 x 15 cm model designed for academic demonstration. We did further research and development to make the product viable,”.

NEW DELHI : As Reliance Jio gears up to launch its much-awaited Jio Fiber on September 5, the telecom operator is offering free installation of its broadband service to all its customers.

"As part of our initial roll out we are offering complimentary JioFiber installation and connection to all our customers. Other than the refundable security deposit, as of now there are no additional installation charges," Jio said on its website.

Jio has already started online registrations of its broadband services, which has been renamed from Jio GigaFiber to Jio Fiber. After its commercial launch on Thursday, Jio Fiber will offer a speed of at least 100 Mbps with a maximum limit of 1 Gbps.

Although Jio is not taking any installation charges but there is a refundable security deposit of ₹2,500 taken for the Jio Fiber router, also known as ONT device.

Using Fiber to the Home ( ) technology, JioFiber's full bouquet of services are delivered through a single fiber optic cable. Jio Fiber’s ultra-fast download and upload speeds enable seamless UHD video services, video conferencing and a variety of camera applications.

Typically the WiFi coverage provided by the Jio Home Gateway comfortably covers an open area of approximately 1,000 square feet.

Plans:

Jio Fiber broadband plans will begin from ₹700 monthly and go up as high as ₹10,000 for premium users. "Currently our JioFiber services are prepaid. We plan to launch the JioFiber Post-paid in due course of time," Jio said. Further details about the plans will be announced later this week.

Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) will soon begin selling its seven-star rated inverter-air conditioners online at ₹41,500 for a 1.5-tonne unit. This will be cheaper than a five-star rated AC.

The star rating is a measure of the energy efficiency of a product, as per standards set by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. The AC offered by EESL is likely to be the most energy-efficient air conditioner available in the Indian market at this price point.

“These ACs will be sold on a dedicated e-commerce website that has been developed for the same. Voltas will be providing the air conditioners. EESL is currently in talks with financing institutions to have an EMI option available for those interested in buying the ACs,” Saurabh Kumar, MD at EESL, told BusinessLine.

In February this year, EESL had launched the ‘Super-Efficient Air Conditioning Programme’ for residential and institutional consumers in Delhi, serviced by BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL).

At 7,241 MW, the peak power demand on Monday was the highest-ever recorded in any city in India. EESL’s programme aims to help reduce the peak power demand in South and West Delhi by 22 MW.

“The new AC EESL is going to offer will be delivered within 48 hours to consumers falling under areas serviced by BRPL and the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Company Ltd in New Delhi. We plan to launch the programme this month,” Kumar added.

EESL has also launched its e-commerce website, EESLmart.in, through which customers of BRPL — and of other Discoms that partner with EESL in future — can purchase the air conditioners.

New Delhi: Twitter has suspended several handles which had used open-source intelligence (OSINT) to put out details of Indian military aircraft, other than fighters, on 26 and 27 February, the day of the Balakot strikes and Pakistan’s retaliatory action respectively.

The social media giant has told handles like the popular , that they’ve been suspended for “violating Indian laws”.

The move has led to speculation that the Indian Air Force (IAF) is behind it. However, sources in the IAF remained tight-lipped about this development, with some also expressing ignorance.

Some accounts also faced ‘shadow bans’, which prevent users from searching and finding tweets by the suspended user or his/her account. One can access these only when the specific URL is typed in the browser, or a link to the account is provided.

Of the many accounts suspended since the weekend, has become active again.

Why the crackdown

During the increased tensions between India and Pakistan in February in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack and the IAF strike on Balakot, many Twitter handles had put out live movements of both Pakistan and Indian military aircraft, including tankers and Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS).

These handles depended on websites like www.flightradar24.com, which provide real time tracking facilities for almost every flight in the world.

Sources in the IAF said the force was surprised when it realised its assets were visible on various handles.

Usually, military aircraft switch to encrypted military transponders when in operation, but when flying in civil air space, ‘civil mode’ is switched on in certain areas or phases of flight.

Handles not based in India

The accounts in question have become a big resource for real time monitoring of military aircraft movement across the world, especially in times of conflict. These accounts are not based in India.

Open-source intelligence handles have been told that they ‘violated Indian laws’, giving rise to speculation that the Indian Air Force is behind the move.
