He started by cleaning tables at a café, and years later, he bought it.
Last week, after three days of teaching Financial Modeling at ISB Hyderabad, I sat down at Cafe Niloufer for their iconic Irani Chai and Bun Maska. ☕
Behind that cup is one of the most powerful entrepreneurial stories I know.
In the mid-1970s, A. Babu Rao came to Hyderabad from a small village in Adilabad with very little money. He joined Niloufer Cafe as a cleaner and waiter. Then he learned the kitchen. By 1978, he was managing the entire café, and in 1993, he bought the full rights with his own savings.
What stands out isn't just the journey from employee to owner. It's the way he built business knowledge before building the business.
He understood the customers, the kitchen, the service, the product. And eventually, the business behind all of it.
It made me think about how unpredictable a journey can be. When you're starting out, you rarely know where the road is going to take you.
A job that looks ordinary today can teach you things that become invaluable years later.
You never know what life is quietly preparing you for.
Keep learning and keep showing up. And never let where you are today limit what you believe you can build tomorrow. Because sometimes, the person you are today is only the beginning of who you can become.
