2 weeks ago, the government launched the much awaited vehicle scrappage policy. I believe that it’s an opportunity in disguise.

It could help India move towards a circular economy. The new policy can cut raw materials cost by upto 40% and is able to generate investment of around 1.35bn.

This organised recovery of metal & plastic junk could pave the way for a parallel industry in metal scraping & plastic waste management.

All things considered, the scrappage policy thrives for a positive push to start a new and elementary automotive ecosystem.

By providing an opportunity to revolutionize the recycling industry, we can promisingly hope for some interesting business models to come up and achieve economic & environmental goals!

The current Indian market is highly unorganised with 85% of suppliers owning less than five trucks. These owners are barely able to make enough financially. Will incentives offered be able to compensate for their investment in new / old vehicles is an important consideration for the policy makers.
